We adopted a pup from Pups of Texas Rescue. They said she was 6 weeks old, had her first set of shots, and been de-wormed. Then they gave her a 2nd set before we took her home. Isn't that too much at 6 weeks? Anyway, she will barely eat and we just found worms in her poop....alot of them. And she is limping with one of her back legs. She doesn't act like it hurts but will barely step with it, she keeps holding it up. Anyone know anything about this rescue organization? 4951

@kingport: Have you taken her to the vet? Most rescues ask that their adopted pups be seen by a vet in the first couple of days.Worms are extremely common among pups whether they come from a shelter, rescue or not. I can't speak personally for that rescue but I do know that Pet Ranch allows them and us ( Lonestar Animal Welfare League) to set up adoption sites and I know the owner of Pet Ranch personally. He does his research on the rescues before he allows them to set up shop. Many times, the rescue organization don't know the history of the animals being adopted out- they maybe strays or pulled from a shelter.
I strongly suggest you take the pup to the vet and have them address your concerns and then take that information back to the rescue if necessary 4951

@kingport: Interesting, I adopted from this organization about a month ago. I will have to say I could not have asked for a better rescue dog. My concern is similar to yours . I was told she had been to the vet and was current in shots as well as spayed. I can see she was spayed however neither myself or my vet is able to get vet records or even a name of the vet. I assume she was spayed at a vet? My vet was concerned about over vaccinating her. She did not have worms but was heart worm positive which she is now being treated for.

They have an ad in the wanted section of KW.com. My plan, now that I have at least an e-mail address (unable to get a phone #) is to send them some suggestions that would be beneficial for the pups they are trying to adopt. It would be very simple to include general vet information with each pup as most recue organizations do. To provide no information just does not seem right.

I also plan to see if they are a non-profit and have the proper documentation filed or are they really trying to make money off these animals.

@tatertot58: Well having vet records on the dogs are very important. When we adopted Our foster Hunter- the vet records were provided and I took a copy to my vet to be placed in his file.

@Jpgurl: I cannot agree more, but I am not having much luck getting them

Let me just add that everyone in our family has fallen in love with this puppy, she is so sweet & loving. We rescued a kitten 3 years ago, and decided to do the same for a puppy now. We believe rescuing is the best, they all deserve a loving home. But I agree that they should get some kind of health info from where these animals come from to provide the new family so we can have an idea of what they need & such. We are going to take her to the vet but I just wish we had more info. I hope nothing is seriously wrong with her hip/leg - the kids will just have a melt down!!! 4951

@kingport: I have been told that they are going to be at Animal Ark on Northpark today. There e-mail address is also in an ad under the wanted section of the classifieds. May want to stop and talk to them. Since it is only a couple of blocks for me I may stop down and have a chat.

My guess is that the rescue that was spayed and the new owner cannot get the rescue to release a vet name is that that animal was either lost or a stray they picked up.  A c-section scar can also look like a spay scar.  The person who has the wormy puppy from the rescue needs to carefully wash down wherever that puppy has soiled as worm eggs can be in carpet, floors ect and are a hazard to humans also.  Good luck. 4951

@doddlebug: Good thought but with this group I am not sure that is the case. At least that is not what they told me. According to my vet, it is a spay scar. They told me when she was spayed and the incision was pretty consistent with the time line. I am going to offer to make them some simple information forms and will even keep up with filling them out for future rescues if they provide the necessary information.

@tatertot58:So, puppy went to vet and has a dislocated knee. Will probably have to have surgery, so now I will have to come up with thousands of dollars for surgery? We were so mislead. Looked up address for the organization, and it was someone's house. So, is the company really non-profit, or they are making money hand over fist on these dogs?  4951

Where was this rescue group set up?  Was it at a business?  Last year at the Petsmart in Humble there was a "rescue" group trying to raise money for a "senior" chihuahua.  They had the jar set up by her crate.  I show chihuahuas and have bred many many AKC chihuahua champions.  I was immediately suspicious as this "chi" did not appear that old.  I would guess her age at four years.  I spoke with the "head" of the rescue group about her dental issues and was told that she would require serious and very expensive surgery to extract teeth.  After she was "passed around" to several people and some young kids who could have dropped her I took her from a young child that was holding her up in the air.  I had a friend who also shows chihuahuas hold her so I could check her teeth.  They were BEAUTIFUL; no signs of tartar or anything.  Definitely not a senior chi.  Prior to me checking her teeth my friend even offered to adopt her and pay for ALL her dental work.  The rescue declined; very strange? We really need to check out some of these groups. 4951

@kingport:
I don't have any answers yet. All I have for them is an e-mail address, I have found nothing on line about the organization so you have a little more information than I do (i.e address). Sorry about your pup... I would check around on the vets, some are a lot cheaper than others. I use Dr. McCann in Summerwood. A bit cheaper than KW vets. 4951

@kingport: just a question but was the puppy limping when you got it? the dislocation might have happened if the pup was playing with kids.

Trust me if they're anything like the rescue I work with they aren't making money hand over fist. Rescues usually operate at a loss. If they have their 501c nonprofit status they are monitored.
I believe they're back at Pet Ranch soon. I suggest you take the pup to them and surrender it back to them. Yeah I know it's hard- but more humane than having a dog with a limp if you're not doing surgery. I'm not sure you have a case against them adopting out "broken goods". Puppies and small breed dogs are notorious for this kind of injury- was the puppy limping when you adopted it- did you adopt on the spot? My dd's Pomeranian has a bad knee that sublaxes all the time. If you don't want to part with it- then get a second opinion and see if there are non surgical options like physical therapy. My dd's Pom has responded well to rest and PT and is 8 years old now and walks without a limp. 4951

Most small breeds do NOT have a subluxed patella; that is more or less a genetic defect and should have been obvious when you got the puppy.  The rescue, at least, should have noticed.  It's a long shot but maybe they have the budget to offer the surgery.  If your puppy is a toy dog and does not get heavy you might be able to not have to get the surgery.  Years ago a vet told me that the Chihuahua puppy that I had bought needed to have surgery on her leg ($1500 and this was years ago).  I waited to see if it would become a problem and it did not; she is now over 12 years of age.  4951

@doddlebug: It's a rescue NOT a breeder-their job is to adopt out NOT fix genetic defects. Or whatever defects there are. We can argue all day doodle ( which seems like that's ALL you want to do). And it won't fix things.
The owner has 2 choices- keep the dog- problems and all or return the dog and move on.
