For the 3rd time in less than 8 months, I have had my debit/credit card numbers stolen. My bank denied charges, canceled my card and will send another but damn...3x now?

I think I'm going to use cash.

@jax: were they able to find where its coming from? Maybe a restaurant or business that you regularly go to?

@buddyboy:

Nope.

This time, they tried to charge $149 at a Target in Overland Park, KS. The time before that, a Best Buy in California. The time before that, furniture in some place in northern California.

What really sucks is that they don't call meto inform me of any questionable charges. I won't even know until I try and buy something. It just so happened that I had eaten breakfast with my daughters, went to pay and the card was denied. I gave them my info, went to bank and returned with the money later. I was ****. Why not just a simple phone call?

Sounds very familiar.

Had an American Express Card number stolen in Abu Dhabi once.

By the time I flew from there to the USA someone had charged $48,000 to my card with small $200 purchases.

I put my card in a gas pump at the same time they were processesimg a charge in Budapest.

Four months later, they caught the people. They were still selling the number. They were located in California. American Express covered all charges and notified me when they located the perps. 4951

hubby got his bill for his credit card the other day & over  $375.00 was charged at a store in California , hubby has never been to Calif. so he called the credit card company & they said  several more charges were being added & they would cancel the card & send him a new one. We have no idea how someone in California got his card # . 4951

The thieves swipe the card here, in gas pumps, at restaurants, then they immediately sell the info to people. They can have a fake card, with your info on it, in a couple hours. I've had mine & my friends stolen the same night, by the same low life waitress. When I went to the bank to dispute charges made in California, my bank guy said the people who swipe earn about $20 per stolen card info. It's just a very small device they have & it only takes a second to do it.  4951

California seems to be home base for such and also for scams toward old people. If you track some of the major scams in the news, they come from some of te more effluent areas iPod Northern California.

On a lighter note, my shock came when I went a whole month and didn't charge anything to my credit card. I was stuck in Algeria under "house arrest" until our contract was settled.

My bill came in and I thought to myself "I've got these guys now, they screwed up the bill and over charged me."

To my surprise, the charge was real. My wife had bought my daughter a new car! Lucky for me, back then the new car cost less than $30,000.

You have to love your a little more than you love your kids. But don't trust her any more than those scammers in California. 4951

@jax: Not to be intrusive, but is it Capital One? That is their Modus Operandi. They do it constantly to us, and everyone else I know that has a Capital One bank account. The kicker is, the one time it was actually stolen, and someone used my card to charge up 1500 in Cars.com gift cards, they let that one fly. Told me I overdrew my account.. lol

I had mine stolen, chase caught it on the first charge, sent me an e mail and called me within an hour.If you can manage credit cards, and pay them off each month, you get more protection than from a debit card, even when the debit card is processed as a credit card transaction. 4951

I've had it happen with both chase cards (twice) and American Express (also twice). In both cases chase noticed after the second attempt, called me and went over the last 5 charges. They sent me an affidavit and removed the charges.
Amex must have some kind of ultra advanced technology to pick up on fake card activity. Both times they actually declined the first fraudulent transaction, sent me an email and when I called and confirmed I didn't use my card, they cancelled it and told me THEY would file a police report and follow up. They also sent me a new card which I got THE NEXT DAY!!! Not that I like having my credit card number stolen, but if it's going to happen, Amex is probably your best bet not to lose any money.
