@mattem ...I watched this program once & it made me sick to think anyone could eat so much that all they could do was lay in bed & eat more . I watched the one where the teenage daughter took care of her fat mother , bathing her , cleaning her house & doing everything she could to keep her mother alive. She died after having surgery to help her loose weight . I was sad for the daughter  but angry with the mother for doing that to her self . Why didn't she think of her child & the life she was causing her daughter to live. My heart goes out to the ones she left behind , but I can not feel sorry for anyone who gains that much weight ....sorry. 4951

@mattem: I've watched a few episodes.
While I am tempted to feel judgmental and disgusted...I think it must be a disease/mental disorder as strong as anorexia or bulimia. I can't wrap my head around it any other way.  4951

I agree it's a sickness. It's got to be hard but if I had a second chance I would take it. 4951

I can understand people getting overweight. I dont understand that. You have to take in enough calories to MAINTAIN that weight much less to gain it to begin with..if I were their caretaker I would just not feed them more than what is healthy because it's not as if they can do it their selves..

It doesn't just happen. They have a sickness and who ever is taking care of them is enabling them. 4951

It is definitely a mental illness, very similar to depression. They can't find any other way to help themselves once they realize they are so severely overweight, so they eat the stress away, just as you may have a drink after a long day. I do love the success stories on that show, though. That just shows you can get through anything! 4951

@mattem: What I have noticed is usually a family member brings food to them in bed. Most of them are on a fixed income.

I would die of starvation if I had to depend on my wife to bring me food while I lay in bed

For people who say we shouldn't judge-there sure is some judging going on in this thread.We don't know what these people have been through.  People can be addicted to food-their lives could have spiraled out of control and their only comfort was the food they ate.  We don't know.And I do get, these people put their lives on display through national tv.  4951

@Okiedokie:

I don't think anyone is judging. More like agreeing that in order to let yourself get so large you must have a mental illness and there are people in their lives that enable them. Much like an alcoholic and their enablers. 4951

@Francita: I can get that.  I have a "large" family.  If one person decides to get healthy, the others start stocking up on cake, etc.  My parents enable each other.  There isn't a day that goes by where one of them doesn't buy at least a candy bar for the other.

It is very sad.

Food addiction I guess it's the same as drug addiction or alcoholism, really.

Why do people eat that much? Same reason some shoot up, smoke cigarettes, and drink. 4951

I loved kick boxing and my MMA classes. I told my physical therapist my goal is to get back into "fighting shape." 4951
