Anyone know what this means? If I'm understanding it correctly, they only need 9 new beginning band students? Surely that's not right. ?

Here's the other side of the letter which I don't think explains it.

I would read it as if they are giving you information as to where the need is versus where they are heavy.  As in, if your child is just starting out they really are not in need of saxophone or cornet (trumpet) players, but they do need bassoon and tuba players.  4951

I would read it as that is the list the kids indicated their preference and that due to the numbers people will shift and not everyone will be selected to play what they prefer or asked to play. 4951

@shodan66:

^^^^ that's it. Go tuba, oboe, or bassoon and your kid doesn't have to carry his jnstrument home every day. Works for percussion too. 4951

Ahh, so you think it says they have just the right number of flute requests and 7 too many percussion? That makes sense. I hope that's right. I panicked when I first saw it! 4951

@shodan66: Bassoon, tuba and French horns are supplied by the school because they are $$$$.  Oboes may be supplied as well.  Saves a lot of money, as instruments can cost in the high hundreds for used quality ones to thousands depending on instrument and brand.  This is a good place to remind everyone of my incident with Andrew at Andrew's Music in Porter.  Without giving details, let me just suggest to the OP to shop elsewhere for your instrument needs.  Humble Music and Music and Arts are in Humble.

I've had good experiences with swicewood in Beaumont too. Their prices on a new yamaha flute weren't bad at all.

Humble Music is good but they sell mostly used brass instruments. 4951

@valentine14 or any other future band parent.

If your child has their heart set on a specific instrument I suggest getting a rental instrument and lessons NOW. When they audition they'll have a slight edge and get a better shot of being selected for their first choice.

After auditions you can focus on getting them a better instrument. (If they get what they chose that is) 4951

Good advice- we have a flute that I played. Maybe I can remember enough to get her started. This will be fun. Lol. 4951

@14valentine:

Gene at Humble music can repad and tighten up any loose screws. Under $100. They can probably polish it up too

I guess I thought orchestra and band were the same as far as renting the instruments.In Orchestra you rent your instrument from one of 2 companies.  Prices vary from $25 to 50.  And this depends on if you want a basic model or a more deluxe one.  They come with cases.You don't try out, you sign up and they will teach you all you need to know.  Having said that, as you go up to the next year etc, they do place you in first chair, etc.  And you need to practice do make these positions.  The school will have a list of private instructors, if you feel you need this.  And once the kids get to 7th grade and can try out for Regional they usually do need some private instruction.  My son joined Orchestra in 6th grade.  He had no musical ability beforehand.  He was taught to read music.  He started private lessons toward the end of the 6th grade, and made Regional in 7th, 8th, and this year in 9th.  We are very lucky to have such great programs at all of our middle schools in Kingwood.  The teachers are amazing.

@Fallon:

In band everyone wants to either play sax or drums. So in order to even things out the directors hold tryouts to see who'd be better suited for what. They look at lips, over bites, and who knows what else. Then they go from there.
