HERMOSILLO, Mexico — Family and friends raised thousands of dollars to send Jose Chua Lopez to the prestigious Mayo Clinic for an urgently needed heart and liver transplant. But the 20-year-old Mexican born with a heart defect has twice been turned down for a U.S. visa, and relatives and his doctor say his life is in danger."They denied me the visa and my world has fallen down," Chua told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "This needs to be fixed quickly."His mother, Myra Lopez Martinez, said Chua has an appointment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in 10 days, but his visa application was rejected a second time by the U.S. State Department on Tuesday. 4951

There is most likely a good reason for his denial. Who is going to pay for his procedure and will it be enough.? Will taxpayers cover the rest of the bill? Not too much information on this guy. 4951

They might have raised the money to get him here but maybe not for the procedure. Our tax dollars should NOT be picking up the tab. If Mexico will pay the bill, then I would be for it 100%. We already pick up the healthcare tab for MILLIONS of illegals. When is enough really enough? 4951

In the past 20 years, little ol' Ireland has learned the repercussions of opening their doors and being bleeding hearts to Eastern Europeans. The "Celtic Tiger" economy was going strong in the mid to late 90s, jobs were plenty, the Pound, then Euro, were strong against the Dollar... In the past 6 years or so, things have changed (like they did here in the US). Now Ireland has gone through what we have - loss of jobs, cutbacks, etc. And now they have all sorts of Polish, Ukranians, etc. who are collecting "on the dole". Problem is - they're collecting from their home countries, where they went back to get work or be closer to family, or whatever. And the gov't can't stop it. And the Banks are in dire straits. I really believe, more and more, that charity has to start at home. If we have a stronger economy overall, that will only bode well for the future of our country, therefore maybe being able to help others. But to continue to go into debt to help others... It's not helping anyone.  I feel for this guy - I do. But, if we allow him, then we might as well open all borders and remove all regulations. Not such a good idea... 4951

There are special visas for medical reasons. Normally the government is very lenient on those. If they are still rejecting it, there must be a good reason. Maybe with a family member.  4951

the article says his family and friends raise thousands of dollars to send him to the Mayo Clinic. I doubt very much they have raised enough to cover the procedure, unless he's with a drug cartel. 4951

@Francita:  It said they've raised "thousands" however, a surgery of that type would be hundreds of thousands or more, not to mention follow-up care, life-long anti-rejection meds, etc. which would get close to a million or more, long-term.  Sounds like they have raised what it would take to get him here, and that's about it. 4951

@donnatella: You are correct, I found an article where his own family estimates the cost at over 2mm.  They have raised $18k for travel and the "first stages of treatment"

If he were with a drug cartel he would have just waltzed across the boarder like thousands do every day.

@Fallon: This was my thought as well, he has a father who resides in Arizona, and I am guessing that he is undocumented also, or the visa for his son would be easier to come by.  He can't hop the fence for the treatment though, as the clinic only approved him on the condition that he gets a visa, they won't treat him if he comes over illegally.

@ForeCPA90: Then what?  Dump him on the US to pick up the rest of the expense. We already feed, clothe, house and medically treat millions already.  Again, WHEN IS ENOUGH?

A better plan would be to use that $18,000 to send the surgical team to Mexico, perform the needed surgery and let the Mexican medical system take care of the rest. 4951

@donnatella: I was not making a commentary, just stating that I found an article that supports what you posted.I was actually wondering the same thing, if the doctors are donating time or anything else, what's stopping them from traveling to Mexico to provide the treatment?

[quote-end-tag-mismatch] @ForeCPA90: Sorry, my "then what?" was a general question, not directed at you.  Perhaps to them $18K is big money, but they have no idea the type of expense they are getting into, and that is a tiny fraction of the overall cost. Their focus is saving his life and I understand that, but the bigger picture is there are likely thousands here on organ transplant waiting lists, U.S. citizens, both with and without insurance. There are stories like this all over the world, I'm sure, but we just can't pick up this kind of tab for everyone who wants it.  It would be different if resources weren't already stretched to the breaking point already.  It is a very sad story, but unless someone comes up with private funding after reading the story, I just don't see how this case is any different from anyone else needing treatment. 4951
