Okay, I have searched the forum, so as not to duplicate a thread, but oh my gosh.... can mattress buying being any more difficult?

DH and I have a queen mattress (Simmons Beautyrest Recharge Doublegate) that we LOVE, problem is they no longer make it and we are looking to get a King.

Saturday we had delivered a Simmons World Class Recharge in King, but it was way too soft, it was a pillow top like all our others have been. We literally looked like we were sinking. No, we are not skinny people, but wow, when they said plush pillow top... I was thinking a little firmer. LOL

Exchanged that one out yesterday for another bed. This time we splurged and got the Sealy Optimum Truth in King. The memory foam feels and felt so much better than the coil mattresses so we got it. It feels a lot firmer though than the one we tried and loved in the store. I expect that is due to multiple people lying on them in the store and ours being new. I did not get hot on the memory foam either like some of the reviews say you do.

Anyhow, my question is what kind of mattress (size too) do y'all have and why?

DH and I both are kind of squished on a queen so we opted for the King, but last night we both were on our sides, and on our edges..... guess it takes time getting used to. I don't know, but at least I did not wake up hurting like usual. Shoulder still pops, but not sure if the firmer mattress is helping or hurting.

Sorry I wrote a book, but please any and all advice is welcome. Emoticon

Oh and is there a true "break in" period with memory foams?

Oh, don't even get me started.. lol. That's what we spent the weekend doing, comparing mattresses. It's down to either a sleep number or a tempurpedic, and honestly, we're totally tossed up as to which one it will be. This is our second mattress in 5 years, because, well, we hadn't bought a mattress in 15 years, and had no idea that these things were now an issue. Back in 1996 we bought a Serta Beautyrest in Queen. It wasn't very expensive, under 500 I'd say. That sucker lasted and lasted, we had no issues with it. About 4 years ago, we finally got the bedroom set we wanted, and I insisted on a king, because between the man and the dog, well, in the queen, I had no place to go (lol) Bought a mattress in king to go with it, nice, plush pillowtop, for the first year, laying in it was heaven. Spent almost a grand on it. Well, now, I can barely get out of bed because my back hurts so bad. Even the dog won't sleep on it anymore. Now, we know mattresses can last a long time, as evidenced by our queen mattress. I think the mattress manufacturers are purposely doing this, so people have to buy them more often! Ok, rant over.Seriously dude, go check out the Sleep Number beds. I know all the hash about "glorified air beds" but, you can adjust them continually should you have a problem, and honestly, I was amazed at it. The Tempur was just as comfortable now, but I worry about the future and the adjustability of it as our bodies age.  4951

Wow Vinbert we sound like one in the same. I agree, I think the mattress companies are making them not last as long. Like DH and I were talking about, I do not recall ever seeing my parents go mattress shopping my entire childhood. It's crazy. Now they have all the firm, extra firm, pillow top. I am about ready to say forget it and sleep on the queen we so love, It is only a few years old and right now it is in our son's room. It is a luxury firm pillow top (whatever all that means) and the new one that we just got is a firm memory foam. I just need to meet a mattress expert who can guide me cause I am lost. LOL 4951

Dh and I have a King.  It was the one he had when we got married.  I can sleep on anything, so it doesn't matter to me what kind we have.DH will never get anything smaller than a king. 4951

Michael and I had a queen for the longest time then went to a king, it was huge in comparison but we got used to it. We still sleep on just half of it.
I bouht new mattresses one day when I was having really bad back problems. I bought them without even consulting him and I went way too firm. It felt good at the time but now that my back is feeling better, I want something softer. He should probably get a say this time but not looking forward to the shopping. 4951

We'll never find a mattress expert that will help with no other agenda. They all want to sell something. I've been doing a lot of online comparisons, review checking, etc. We were pretty much decided we wanted the Sleep Number, but then, a mattress salesguy at another store (surprise!) gave us a dialogue with some things we hadn't thought of about the sleep number beds. Tempurpedic has a 10 yr warranty. Any issues, they'll replace the bed, Sleep number is 2. Yes, they tell you its 25 and it kinda is, but it's prorated. They only fully cover it for two years. Why is that? And as I am in my 50's and my husband is quickly approaching, ( he has at least 4 disintegrated disks) we're looking at getting the full adjustable setup, which from either company will cost around 8 grand, so we're taking our time with this purchase.. lol Frankly, the thought of being able to hit a button to raise his head when he starts snoring is really enticing me. The Sleep Numbers have a split king, where  the sides are independent of each other, whereas, with the Tempur, you'd have to get two twins stuck together.  I calculated it the other night, I sleep 1.4 hours at a time, before I have to move around. It really sucks. And I was always the one that could sleep on anything. When the bed has gotten bad enough that I can't sleep on it, it's bad.  4951

@BooBear: We bought a foam top to go on top of ours.  It works b/c if we want it firmer, we just remove the topper.

I am debating on buying myself a twin bed.  The animals have overtaken my side of the bed.  I would be nice and push it next to the king. 4951

I was turned off by mattress shopping until I realized I was over thinking it. I knew I wanted a memory foam after visiting several mattress stores. But the prices they were asking were ridiculous. So sight unseen, I ordered one through Amazon due to the almost impossibly good reviews from among a huge sample size of reviewers, at a price that was more than half of what the brick and mortar stores were asking (queen size for only $450). It is the best, most comfortable mattress I have ever owned. At this price, it was worth the risk. I got one of each and decided to use the one I liked best and put the other in the guest bedroom.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003CT37L0/ref=psdc_2457301011_t2_B007HD9YYQhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007HD9YYQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&ampEmoticonsc=1 4951

I'm like @Okiedokie ...I can literally sleep on anything, so the wifey chooses our bed. It's a pillow top king that's 20+ inches thick. That's all I really know about it, except it's comfy. She bought it last year as part of my birthday present. The real gift was one of those tall, rustic, pedestal beds. I had always wanted one because it's easier to get down out of bed...Plus it's really cool looking, and built like a tank. She had to have them build her a set of steps to get into it. Emoticon Also, we have had king sized beds since our first year together. We had a full for the first few months..And for those that have met/seen me, you'll know why THAT didn't work out. We have an 8" IComfort - they also come in 10". We love it.. It's about 4 yrs. old now. It says it should last something like 20 yrs. It's like sleeping on a cloud. Not to firm - but not mushy either. I've never get warm from b/c it has the cooling gel in it. Skeros sells them,  they use to have  a banner on their building. 4951

Also, just an FYI, NONE of the mattresses that we have tried in the store are feeling the same in the home. Mattress Firm does have the 100 day happy guarantee, but let me warn you, they charge $149.00 each time you are unhappy within those 100 days and have to change it out. UGH.... Everyone says that there is a break in period for all mattresses, I beg to differ. Just like shoes, there should not be a break in period, they should be comfortable from day one. If not, something is not right. 4951

We also bought our cool gel injected memory foam bed from Amazon. Hubby was here and needed a bed, he didn't have time to shop. I ordered it with Prime, it showed up compressed in a box on the day he needed it. It's a touch firm, but I've made much worse mattress choices shopping brick and mortar. We downsized from king to queen, just didn't need all the space. Hubby is a major cuddler, he'd be happy with a twin. 4951
