My boxer is under the delusion that my new, beautiful couch is his throne. Being that I'm a pet sitter, I've seen A LOT of creative attempts at keeping pets off the furniture. the most effective I've found is the electrified ScatMat. It gives a jolt when it's touched, and runs on a battery. Before I drop the $$$ on this thing, I thought I'd check with yall to see if you have any tried & true methods to keep the pets off of furniture when you're not home? 4951

Our older dog (15+ years) can't climb up any more.  Our younger dog is welcomed on our couch and our bed.  She relaxes me when she lays up against me. 4951

we have 3 dogs & they "live" in our home, they climb on the chairs, sofa & our bed. My hubby will lay on the floor & play with them , unless your dog is really large (takes up the entire sofa) why would you not want them to be comfortable ? 4951

My husband is a push over for the animals - but none were ever allowed on the couch or bed.  That's fine with me. Plus the dog & previous dog are very large. 4951

@OhHappyPets:

I would so put that outside my sons bedroom door or maybe replace Michaels shower mat. 4951

@WJo I love my boy being on the couch with me- when I'm home. But when I leave, he rubs himself all over it, & this is the most expensive & beautiful piece of furniture I've ever owned. Also he weighs 80lbs so I'm just trying to keep the couch nice as long as possible. Oh he also has a cushy dog bed, and access to a carpeted area. I think I'll try flipping the cushions up when I leave & see if it helps. @boobear Videos please! 4951

nah, he'll just drag them around.....I throw quilts over my sofas....    leads to extra laundry, but  reduces the sofa cleaning. 4951

@msuz My little jerk scratches the quilts off the couch. I even tuck them into the cracks & he manages to get them off!! 4951

Letting him on when you are there is sending mixed messages to him.

Use a baby gate and keep him out of the living area when you aren't there. 4951

@lola:

That would take several baby gates to close off her living room. Plus her fat lard cat would just knock them down. She uses the top off the baby gate like a catapult from which to hoist her big butt over. Emoticon 4951

We would put our barstools on the sofa while training previous dogs not to get on furniture.

I have heard aluminum foil keeps cats off. Will it work for dogs too? 4951

That's what we use. Got an extra long one at Lowe's, it screws into the walls (if you want) and swings back and forth. This way, they stay in the kitchen area when we're not home. And this is what they look like once we are home...

Our dog is not allowed on the furniture either. But she has a big comfy bed in the living room, a cozy crate in family room and her own patio chair. Spoiled dog! 4951

@OhHappyPets...my friend has a large dog (great dane) & when she leaves the house she rolls out a sheet of tin foil on the sofa & chairs , it keeps them off the furniture !  Guess it scares hem when they get on it so now they stay clear of it when they see it on  & it keeps them off. 4951
