OMG! I think everyone can relate. "Illness" can be a great manipulating weapon for control, sympathy sucking, attention hoarding and outright domination of every situation. It can also get you a position where you still get paid but get to dump your responsibilities off on your co-workers, and by law, your employer both can't stop it and is also afraid to fire you for your blatant manipulation.

Illness, if played just right, can be quite powerful. 4951

That's hilarious! While I do know that Celiacs is a legitimate concern, I do know of a few people who pretend to be gluten intolerant because it seems to be "the in" thing to be. That irritates the heck out of me. They are perfectly fine. Quit faking just to get attention or to seem important. That takes away from the people who actually have problems and may need that special attention. 4951

This nurse practioner told me my son's chronic stomach aches were probably caused by "glutenen" and I should remove all "glutenen" from his diet immediately. No, no, we don't want to do those invasive tests. Just have him stop eating it for a while to see if that helps. That lasted 2 weeks. Longest 2 weeks of my life. Thank God the specialist had some different philosophies on the subject. 4951

Funny, but although hubby doesn't  have celiac disease, cutting gluten makes him feel so much better,  He gives in now and than and feels so bad.  it just makes sense for him to cut it out of his diet.  We just didn't figure it out for ages, it's been over 25 years since he's had undiagnosed problems. 4951

But being gluten sensitive, intolerant or Celiac is so fashionable right now, until you start craving certain items, then you tolerate gluten just fine. Only a very people are truly sick with it. The rest are posers. 4951

Thank God for the hipsters, because without them adding to the consumer market for gluten free products I wouldn't have these: 4951

I was asked by a waitress this weekend if I minded if the corn tortillas had lard in them.  "HELL NO, give me all the lard and other unhealthy stuff you have.  Celiac does not mean vegan.  for me, it's NOT a lifestyle choice."   She laughed (has obviously run into the gluten fadsters). 4951

@Odin:

While you are right that the "hipsters" helped to get more gluten free products on the shelves, I think sometimes the ones who are faking it make things difficult for those like you who actually do have an allergy to it. Mainly because their attitude is different, at least that has been my experience. I'm not quite sure if I'm explaining right, so forgive me if that doesn't make sense. 4951

@bp2018: Oh, I agree.  But I'd still rather take some flak then be without my GF donuts and GF oreos (as seen in this vid... they are very good).
While that video was funny as hell, I do want to set some facts straight.  It is an autoimmune disorder not an allergy or an intolerance. The primary symptom of celiac is actually not "intestinal" issues.  It's neurological.  It DOES cause depression and headaches/migraines and a whole lot of other crap (referencing the section on all the conditions it "causes").  It really does cause all of those (like lymphoma/cancer) in those with Celiac.  That is an absolute scientific fact.   But for non celiacs, not likely.  (I also don't order the wrong thing and then send it back).  So, while funny as hell, from where I'm sitting it was a bunch of crap.  but then, I'm not a hipster) 4951

But it was spot on about the bread.  tastes like moldy cardboard.  and I do fake people out with "oh, yeah, this bread is great!".  I do it to make them feel better.... don't want to be a pain when someone is being nice and serving it. 4951

@Odin: I feel for you. I wouldn't want to exclude all gluten unless absolutely necessary. I enjoyed the challenge of making new recipes though. The homemade waffles weren't bad. And the breading for orange chicken was pretty darn good. But Udi's cinnamon rolls and similarly over-priced items were just awful!

Like @MarT said, some people just feel better when they avoid it, and that's true. The specialist my son went to see, he said that wheat causes inflammation, so anyone will feel better eliminating it or at least reducing it from their diets.

From what I know of Celiac, however, that's a whole nother animal. I'm glad you have more options due to the fad and the buzz words! 4951

@Odin: If you like carrot cake, you really should try HEB's G/F carrot cupcakes.
