At my husbands last physical the doctor recommended he stop taking fish oil due to a new study linking it to an increased risk of prostate CA and no evidence it was helping his heart.

I always thought that this strategy sounded a little fishy... 4951

Correlation =/= causation.  This study came out two years ago.  This is meta-data obtained from two different studies, none of which seem to account for or provide a nutritional log of the subjects indicating potential sources of the fish oils in their diet, or how long the subjects had been supplementing.  The oxidation state of the measured omega-3 is apparently not evaluated; biochemically speaking, this is quite relevant.  Also, we do not know the familial history and/or PSA scores at baseline.  Maybe that info is in the original studies data, but I don't see an attempt to correlate or rule out in association with those factors.  Also, if followed out properly, what are the survival data for those that do get prostate cancer AND supplement?  IOW, do men with prostate CA survive longer if they avoid omega-3s?There is weak association, at best, and I think it's a large leap to go from this study's conclusions to disseminating medical advice.  I would question the physician to see whether they had actually read the study and considered the design and results, as opposed to simply reading the abstract and making medical recommendations based on such. 4951

My dh had some very impressive cholesterol numbers that he attributed to fish oil. I started taking them about a month ago. Within 2 weeks I had welts- I thought they were mosquito bites- random and made sense as bites- they kept getting itchier and itchier and every couple of day a new on would pop up. Started to think they were bed bugs (!!!!!!!) but I was the only one getting bit. Then it occurred to me I had added the fish oil. Lo and behold when I researched it I found out some people are sensitive to the higher amounts of DHA even though they have no fish or shell fish allergies. I stopped taking them 2 weeks ago and the hives are slowly resolving with benedryl- but if I get hot and sweaty they get itchy again. Who knew?? 4951

@Jpgurl:

I wonder if this is what has been causing my face to break out in the last several weeks. I started taking this about 2 months ago. Hmmm. Research time. 4951

I had my teeth cleaned last week and the hygenist said she didn't remember my gums bleeding before during cleaning and it wasn't noted in my file.  They did bleed this last time.  I only slightly noticed at home during flossing.  Everything I bolded is something I've experienced in the last several weeks.  Break outs is missing, unless thats considered a rash.  Also I've had vivid dreams lately too.  No more for me.  4951
