My son came home with squash from a field trip yesterday, so that's about it! We're having our backyard sodded, and mulched, next week so unless I decide to do some potted veggies, I doubt we'll have much of a garden this year.

That said, can you suggest any fruit bushes/trees that we can plant in our yard that won't have roots that will attack our pool? We have three big trees coming down (due to extensive roots), and we'd like to plant something else less invasive! 4951

Tomatoes and strawberries hopefully. Begonias. Any suggestions for a fragrant herb that will grow in full shade? 4951

I guess my father had the green thumb in our family and mine is brown (no, not THAT brown!).  I've tried gardening but was never successful.  I grew up tending dad's 1/2 acre garden and we often had so many vegetables, we had to give some away.  We would fill his large freezer, and fill the pantry with canned vegetables. 4951

@ctl74: In ground or above pool? When I was a kid we had a large above ground. My mom use to bring us cantaloupe out there. I would take the rhines and throw them on the side of the pool. Few months later, huge patch of em, must have got about 15-20 lol! All the water splashing and the mild chlorine, really kept em healthy and stout. Not sure about in ground. Don't think I've ever seen anyone plant anything around them except in larger planters. Likely not a good idea.

Right now since October 2014 I helped my daughter plant a cabbage plant as she entered in a cabbage growing contest in her school.

I started my Okra, Cucs, squash and grape toms. Yesterday I bumped up all my veggies to bigger pots and thinned out.  Never grown the grape tomatoes and by the way they look, I might have to purchase the plants. I can't seem to find the grapes, but I'll settle for Cherry toms! Love love love okra and my neighbor turned me onto grilled okra! I'm addicted and have great production luck with these! I also have limited space so I'll plant them around the perimeter of the yard. @ctl74  What about a couple blueberry trees (two varieties needed for pollination), Thornless blackberries, Lemon/grapefruit tree.  4951

We don't have much planting space that gets enough sun. I think I'll do tomatoes and basil in pots and peppers in the ground. Sounds like I need to get moving. 4951

Just a small garden this year but it beats the container gardening I have done the last two years. Tomatoes, jalapenos, sage, english mint, basil, and maybe cantaloupe. There was already a huge rosemary bush in the yard. I'll probably plant a grapefruit and Meyer lemon tree in the side yard. Excited about a new project! 4951
