Well good afternoon! I'm about 4 months new to kingwood. I'm in the midst of a situation that I would LOVE some unbiased opinions on. Emoticon

I am pregnant, and I'm having problems at work. I work with a primarily Spanish speaking crowd, but I know enough to understand generally what they are saying. The problem is, I am called "gordita" and "gorda" instead of my name, and when I went to my general manager about it, her response was "oh, okay, Gordita...". It made me a little upset. Well, the next day I received a demotion and now they are withholding my paycheck. I asked the same GM why I couldn't have my check and she said "you don't even work that many hours...maybe you can have it on Monday, Mucho Lazy".

Now am I crazy or is this discrimination? Should I grin and bear it? I feel like I need to quit to maintain some kind of emotional stability! Sheesh I'm just very stressed and confused and from the looks of it, y'all have a wonderful sense of humor so hopefully I can have some laughs.... 4951

that is just some weirdness from quoting...i would  ignore gordita and such...or you can make it a matter of contention because it seems everyone is calling you that including the manager. it is illegal to discriminate for pregnancy...oh and it is also a legal issue for them to pay you late regardless of how many hours you work. your manager needs a lesson in administrative  responsibility and liabilities. might they be trying to get you to quit so you don't get maternity leave? and there is such a thing as creating a hostile  work environment....that can get costly quite rapidly for stupid companies 4951

Thank you for your input. Is that still true even if it is a "mom and pop" type of company? I was told the legalities and such all change when the business is not corporate.

@LuluLayla: Not legal, but difficult to get anything done about it.  Corporations tend to be self-policing to keep outside government agencies from getting in their business - though crap still goes on.  Government agencies usually can not be bothered trying to chase down issues at mom and pop shops.  Were you up front about the pregnancy?

I was up front about it, because I am not permitted to lift things that are very heavy. Maybe I should have kept it a secret until that is no longer possible. 4951

The law applies everywhere no matter what the size of the company. The problem is proving it. Their refusing to give you your check is theft of services. Get your check and file a complaint against them with the EEOC, but before you do, get some kind of proof, recording, email, etc. 4951

@LuluLayla: Well, if they hired you knowing you were pregnant not sure why they would now try to get rid of you.  Is it a job that requires lifting?

@donnatella: And not getting paid is the one thing you will get gov't support on.

@ET:

I hope I did the "quote" thing right.

There is very minimal lifting involved. I haven't even had to refuse to do anything because I felt it would be dangerous either. It's just all so strange to me. I wish didn't feel like I had to quit my job in order to not be treated this way.
