I'm the mother of an almost 12 year old boy who was recently diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. After a recommendation from his pediatrician to have him tested, I was at a loss for what to do next. I didn't know where to start. Thankfully I found out that I had friends & co-workers with knowledge who started pointing me in the right direction to get the services we needed. I've formed this group to hopefully gather other local resources to help us & others like us. Maybe even get some helpful advice from parents who have more experience with it. I look forward to getting to know you all & sharing our experiences, knowledge & advice!https://www.facebook.com/groups/1551958825093394/

No, I had not heard of them.  He was just (very recently) diagnosed at Kingwood Psychiatry.  I do have him involved in a social skills group at "Navigating Behavior Solutions" in Kingwood.  I'll look into the other as well and see what they have to offer.  Thanks! 4951

@ Topcat- you too?? I knew I like you for a reason. Emoticon
But seriously my son could've swung either way( mental illness vs mental "retardation")
Best advice go with the MR label vs the MI label. Way more state benefits wi the MR label.
Good luck to the OP. Contact The Village Learning Center- they're an awesome resource! 4951

I hope you don't mind me piggybacking off your post, @kb62268, but are there adult Asperger's support groups? Where would an adult go for testing? I've researched, but I'm curious what others have done.  4951

@Grimmie: Honestly, I'm not sure. I've opened my group to all. Those with Asperger's (no matter the age) and people who have friends & family with Asperger's. I just recently spoke with a woman who thinks she may have found a good place for adults to be tested, but hasn't had her appt. Yet. (Along with the fact that it seems to be harder to get the diagnosis for females from what I've heard. If you PM me.....I'll let you know her feelings of the place after her visit. (That way I make sure I remember you. My memory is not what it used to be. Lol) 4951

Any good psychiatrist can diagnose- there not really a test per se. I'm not really sure what good a label can do for an adult unless he/ she is looking for supportive therapy or psychiatric medication for the more problematic behaviors. In order to take advantage of MHMR programs and benefits here in Texas a person must be diagnosed with mental retardation ( Aspergers falls under that ) before the age of 18. Now as far as the Mental Illness side- diagnosis can come at any time - though the benefits there are severely lacking. There used to be a very long wait to get benefits ( used to be a 10 year wait list) and parents were encouraged to sign their child up early. I've heard the list is much much shorter but always a good idea to get on the list quickly. Now all of this may have changed- it's been over 14 years since all of this applied to our son.
Good luck with everything- it's a long hard road and it never ends 4951

I honestly have never personally looked for support groups, but I do know about some therapies. If you think he needs extra guidance or therapy, a family member of mine who has an Autistic son used Texas Children's Hospital. They have a variety of therapies there that have seemed to work out great. Just remember Asperger's is not a death sentence! It is the mildest form of Autism and usually means the children are very high functioning in some areas. He still has just as much chance to be successful in life. Emoticon 4951
