So,  I've been job hunting for months now.  I'm not only looking for a job for now,  but also trying to decide what I want to finish my degree in to make a career.  I have found that  a sign spinner often makes 10/ an hour, and a medical assistant sometimes makes 9/ hr.   A research assistant at UT has to have a Bachelors degree, but only makes 15/ hr, but a pest control person at HISD starts at 22/ hr.  WTH??? 4951

@topcat: Hang in there. You're the total package - you'll find something you like that pays well. Every time I go looking for another part-time job, I realize how good I have it. It's rough out there! 4951

With everyone getting degrees now it seems like degrees are being undervalued.  On the plus side, not everyone has to go to college to earn a decent living.Also keep in mind, you may start out at 9 an hour, but you will have benefits, hopefully, and long term security and chances for promotion.I know when I got my teaching degree, I made more money waiting tables during the summer and at night.  Still ticks me off.

@Fallon: I am majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with Psych concentration. After that,  I'll get an alt teaching cert.   I love to teach,  and NEED summers off.  Don't want to major in Ed in case I change my mind.

@Elle10: Awww thanks!  I am a single mom with two kids starting college in the fall. I need at least 16.32 an hour plus benefits to be able to pay the bills and eat. Yes, I calculated it to the penny, lol!

I suggest health care if you are going to finish a degree. I know a 26 year old PA making six figures. Nurses can make six figures or close and have flexible schedules. There is also lab work, radiology, etc.   4951

Are you basing the hourly pay on 2080 hours or reduced for summers off?

@Stealth83: I based it on 40 hrs a week, 52 weeks a year. My math may be a little fuzzy, lol, because I did it in the middle of the night while I was stressing and couldn't sleep. This calculation is until I finish my degree, not as a permanant figure. I *may* be able to work as an aide and hit school with a vengeance in the summers and mini mesters in December. I could only do that with help from my family or loans, both of which I am reluctant to accept. I have been an aide in the past for 5 years, and taught in private preschools as well, so I am no stranger to the education system. Incidentally, I was raised by a teacher as well. Summers off would just be a bonus to me, as teaching is in my blood and heart♡

@Mrb1:
Nurses who make six figures are working a butt load of overtime and probably don't have benefits.
RN's start at about $50,000 full time with benefits.
X-ray techs start at about $18-$19 hr full time with benefits.
PRN X-ray techs start at $23 but no benefits
Ultrasound is an excellent choice too. There is regular ultrasound, cardiovascular, pediatric cardiovascular and Vascular. The cardio and vascular techs start at around $26 full time with benefits. ( at least that is what they were making a few years ago).

PRN nurses start at about $44 hr but depends on hospital.

PRN is as needed, no medical benefits, some hospitals offer 401K some don't.

Green energy is going to become huge. Sustainable development, environmental science. Both the science part of it as well as contracts and the legal aspect. Math degrees and business and financial analyst degrees pay fairly well. GIS, remote sensing, geology, do as well. 4951
