Good afternoon, all!My family and I are moving to Kingwood in the next few weeks. We've spent months looking at homes in the area and found one we love in the Mills Branch village. Sadly, a number of acquaintances are determined to dampen our enthusiasm with what appears to be outdated rhetoric regarding crime in Kingwood. I've researched as much as I can find online and as far as I can tell, the Mills Branch area is relatively safe considering how close it is to a major city.I'll just looking for some input on a few specific questions:1) Am I moving my family into bedlam, or is this area of Kingwood reasonably safe? By reasonable, I mean am I able to take basic precautions (lock doors, stay off the greenbelt after dark, keep garage door shut) and live a happy life there?2) Is my wife safe to run on the greenbelts during daylight hours? How about children?3) What are your recommendations for home security? We don't bother with much stuff, but are people getting attacked in their homes?Thanks for your input.  4951

@mdemargel:

No place is crime free. Kingwood is fairly safe, but it depends on who you ask and what you're used to. Some people think its Armageddon when a car gets broken into. Just do your own research and be happy with your decision. 4951

@mdemargel: in my opinion mills branch is safe and family friendly. We even have a uniformed off-duty houston pd that patrols the neighborhood. What street are you moving to? I ask because the house on my street is/was for sale. I think it is safe to go on greenbelts. It's not even close to bedlam. The biggest issue you may face is someone getting in you car at night if you leave it unlocked. Mostly small time theft and some car break ins.

Your wife will be just fine on the green belts. We've lived here 12 years and I use the green belt almost daily for running and walking the dogs and never had a problem- except for with morons who think it's ok to have their dogs off lead. I've even used the trails before dawn and after sunset for a while till I discovered big creepy spiders who build their webs overnight across the trails. Only takes a few times of web face to cure anyone of using them at night. She needs to be aware of her surroundings- like anywhere- I suggest not wearing earbuds or just one.
As far as the rest of Kingwood- not had much problem- we did get our car gone through after forgetting to lock it- but we don't keep anything of value. Honestly we saw more crime in Cincinnati and suburbs than we've seen here in the last 12 years!
We love Kingwood- you will too- Welcome 4951

I've lived in Bear Branch for 11 years and have not one bit of crime.  A lot of the folks who have been here longer act like the sky is falling if one blade of grass is disturbed.  You & your family will be fine here. I have a greenbelt trail that goes in front of my house and is used a lot & there has never been a problem.

@mdemargel: Mills Branch is one of the safest Villages in Kingwood.  They hire off duty HPD to patrol.  It seems to deter crime quite a bit.   I live in Mills Branch and love it.   Hidden Hollow is great if you have elementary kids !!

Thanks for all of the great feedback! We are very excited to be here. We are currently in Montgomery, TX, but hate being so far away from the city and miss the diversity that a big city has to offer. I've lived all over the country, including all four time zones and both coasts. My last home (Durham, NC) used to have a horrible rep for crime and it was one of the best, most diverse cities I ever lived in. Now it gets nationally recognized as one of the best places to live in America.We have a 6 year old who will attend Hidden Hollow and have heard great things. No reason for us to have cars unlocked on the street.Again, thank you all for taking the time to respond. We close on March 12th and will move in that weekend. 4951

Welcome to Kingwood! I am in Sand Creek village and have never had an issue in the 6 + years I have lived here. I have a bunch of kids and they love it. It is no different than any other city. Relax and enjoy! 4951

@mdemargel: It's as safe as safe can be these days. The young ones still play in the street, kids ride bikes on the greenbelts, and soccer moms use their jogging strollers. The schools are top notch. Welcome!
