Get an EMF detector and let her go on her own ghost hunt of your hotel.

Only do the cemetery tours with a guide - the area can be unsavory.

Aquarium

Google the walking Ghost tours and see who has the best reviews. My trip has been too long to be current with tour name

How about a cooking class?

Pralines from Aunt Sally's are my favorites.

Brunch at one of the big boys like Commander's Palace.

Also, a blindfold for her use or yours if you don't want to realize what all she might see on Bourbon St. 4951

If she's 16 she probably already knows what goes on in New Orleans on Bourbon St. Of course you won't want to or be able to take her into many of the places but there are some places that she can go. It would be a shame to go to New Orleans and not visit Bourbon St. I'll probably get a lot of.. are you crazy ? comments but she is going to be exposed to it sooner than you probably think and what better time than with mom there saying.. " that's what happens when you do stupid stuff " as you point to the drunk passed out on the sidewalk. 4951

@RNMom: We go to New Orleans quite often and always stay at Hotel Provincial. The back building is pretty creepy, and the courtyard rooms are very nice. The walking tour that includes the ghost/vampire/voodoo stuff all in one is a lot of fun. In my opinion, the hole in the wall places usually have the best food! 4951

Lots of great places - ESP restaurants. BUT PLEASE be careful!!!! Hubby's territory is Lousianna- oil, gas and water- a ton of it close to New Orlean. Anymore he avoids staying in the French Quarter like the plague. Crime is way way up- scammers and robbery every where- preying on tourists. I used to wander all over ( like every block except Broubon- not my taste)- down to the River, FQ by myself all day and night while he was conducting business. He said now I shouldn't - it must be bad - because he knows Im extremely aware and can handle myself. He's in his room by sunset which is saying a lot since he's ex military with martial arts background. Last time I was there was this past Fall for a Saints game and yea I saw some stuff that didn't exist 4-5 years ago. If you get your " Don't even F with me" look on and be assertive in your voice you'll avoid the worst.
Having said that dh likes Luk's, Ole Saints ( on Royal St- more of a beer joint but food was good) and the American Sector across from the WWII Museum ( the Museum is pretty cool too but IDK about a teen liking it). I loved Lousianna Pizza Kitchen but hubby said that that end of FQ is not safe. He says Acme Oyster house is nothing but a tourist trap but recommends Deanys ( Deani's or Deeni's?? Don't know the spelling) Seafood. And any of the hole in the walls in Uptown are good. The Warehouse district holds a lot of nice ( and pricey) restaurants along with the Garden district ( he recommends Houston's there- that is very very pricey) 4951

The Original Pierre Masperos is one of our favorite restaurants in the French Quarter. The food is excellent, reasonably priced, the service is terrific & the building dates to the mid 1700's.

We did a cemetery tour through Haunted Hostory Tours...loved it!

When you get back, post your hits & misses. We go about once a year & are hopefully headed there again this summer so we love good tips too! 4951

All good suggestions listed here. But be careful - my parents who live there tell me that the crime is up too. 4951

I haven't found NOLA to be any more dangerous than Houston to be honest. Just have common sense. I stay in the FQ & have never had any issues.
That said, you should head down to to the French Market, have benets at Cafe du Monde, and arrange to do a walking ghost tour at one of the places down there. Walk around, shop, then for lunch split a muffalatta at the General Grocery place there on Ursalines. Or get poboys at Johnnys (I recommend the roast beef). Check out St Louis cathedral, it's gorgeous inside. Take a donkey carriage ride when your feet get tired. If you like, hit up Pat Obrians, Bourbon St isn't too much for a 16 year old during the day, night time is another story! We took a bus tour years ago & it was a great way to see lots of stuff, including the cemeteries. Be sure to jump on the street car & check out the garden district. New Orleans is such a gorgeous place, and the locals are friendly! You'll be exhausted when you leave, but will also be planning your next visit! 4951

@OhHappyPets: Honestly Houston has Nothing on NOLA( ESP FQ) here lately. I'm a seasoned traveller- Dh is hardcore ( think back country in 3rd world countries). If he's saying BE Careful - then BE Careful. Trust me Ive been in some iffy situations and know how to deal. Of Course you need to be aware. Dh warned me because he knows me- I've been in places Im pretty sure not many people have seen in the FQ or NOLA. I'm not saying don't go- just be very careful

@jpgurl @goldie YEP!  If you do want to visit the quarter definitely go during the day. Just not the same as it was back in my day. Our stomping ground was the quarter and uptown! Be careful. 4951

My husband and I just when Mardi Gras was just beginning, The French Quarter was packed but we had a great time.  Went to eat at Antoines and it was outstanding.  We have also been to Mr. B's, Commanders and Court of Two Sisters.  All are a little pricey but worth it for a special occasion.  What was stated on above post about safety is very important, you have to be careful and know where you are going and stick together and never walk through alleys as a shortcut.  It is a great place to visit and so many things to see and do.  And yes the hole in the wall places are the best places to eat.  I don't think Bourbon Street is bad during the day but at night they do get wild so that is a judgement call.  I love New Orleans, was born and raised there and like any other place they have their good and bad areas.  Hope you and your daughter have a great time.  They will also be having the St. Patricks Day Parade there March 13th in the quarter at 6PM and March 15th is the parade in Metaire on Metairie Rd. 4951
