It's time of the freaking year again. I have a 5th grader who has to do a science fair project. We were given a list of websites to check out for ideas but my 5th grader isn't happy with their choices. They want to do something really different and cool that will blow the judges away.

Any suggestions from any parents and teachers out there. We have to begin the project this weekend. And as I stated in a previous thread, I have back surgery coming up so we need to take care of this rather quickly.

Any advice or ideas? Thanks ya'll. 4951

My daughter is also doing her 3rd grade science project. We are still looking for ideas even though we have three choices right now. 4951

Watch some old Mr. Wizard shows. One that was interesting was "Electricity"  It featured a Rube Goldberg Machine that demonstrated various methods of generating electricity.

Do you think making a new app for phones would be considered science project? 4951

I won the science fair with this one. Plant three or four Lima beans in small solo cups. Cover each cup with a different color of Saran wrap, making sure one is clear. Put the cups on a sunny window sill & chart their growth to see what color of light promotes faster plant growth.
OR make a wiener roaster with a piece of wood, two nails & an extension cord. 4951

Sounds perfect! awesome sauce!

Out of curiosity what colors did you use? How long did it take and which one grew the fastest? I won't give my kid the answers. But I'd like to know what I'm looking for. :-)

@mf9349:

My 3rd grader did a like/compare human/cat/dog blood samples with electonic microscope to display her findings.

The judges: Meh....

Winner: Mold growing on apple.

I think my 3rd grader went over their heads.

if you want to impress the judges, choose something cute, and not too technical. 4951

@mf9349 I know I used red, blue, and clear, maybe also do yellow and green. Make sure to water the sprouts using a syringe so you can give them the each the same amount of water. I can't remember how long it takes to sprout, I wouldn't imagine more than a week. There are other beans to use, squash, peas, anything in the gardening section. 4951

One year I did which paper towel was the best.
I wrote the paper towel companies and they sent me loads of info about making paper towels. Now a days they probably have that stuff on their websites.
And I bought some name brands and generic. I put them throughout various test I made up. Like running them through the clothes washer.
I didn't win but I did pass, which was all I cared about.
