The UK's attempts to retain the colonies was merely symbolic and they only made a token effort.  Had they used even a small fraction of their forces we'd be singing "God Save the Queen".  Essentially, we won because they couldn't be bothered.True or False?  Discuss. 4951

True BUT the Spanish would have eventually taken over and we would be singing la Marcha Real. 4951

@Odin:  The French had Canada and the Louisiana Territory at that time.  Louisiana was not doing as well as Canada, so they gave it to Spain (back when European royalty was mostly related).  Spain tried to make Louisiana work and ended up giving it back to France.  France and Spain had problems getting people to immigrate to Louisiana to make it a profitable venture.  They had the fur trade in Canada, so I doubt that the French would have even wanted to get involved with the Colonies.  They were happy to sell off Louisiana later to the USA, partially because it was too far to defend, but primarily to pay off Napoleon's debt from his European wars.BTW:  My progenitor was a French soldier that was sent to Louisiana around 1750.  Like most soldiers, after his tour of duty was over, he remained in the "new world", married, and ran a small store in New Orleans.

@Odin:  I don't know Odin.. they tried again in 1812. It lasted for two and a half years and resulted in the burning of the White House. Sounds like a lot of effort just to **** us off. :-)

@Retired_Engineer: Where would we get our gumbo and Boudin if it hadn't been for all them French Canadians that they ran out of Canada?

@BlissfullyRetired: That was my son's response.  (we were discussing Revolutionary war history today.... yes, we're weird)
But I still contend that even in 1812 they could have taken us back if they wanted to.  They had no interest in doing so.  Their objective was to keep the USA out of Canada, which they succeeded in doing. 4951

@Odin:  No.. I don't think you are weird at all. I wish all young people would learn more about American history and since it seems obvious that they aren't learning it in school, parents should see to it that they know how our country came about and the form of government that the founders gave us that made us a great country. I don't think whether the Brits could've defeated us or not is that important. What is important is that they didn't. It allowed the United States to become a world leader.BTW.. have you ever seen Water's world on Fox? In a way.. it's supposed to be funny but it really just shows how little our citizens and students know about their country. It's a shame.

@BlissfullyRetired: True, but I'm a big alternate history buff so it's fun to speculate on "what could have been".  About to start reading the "The Man in the High Castle"
I haven't seen Water's world, but yes, it's sad how ignorant most people are... at least in some areas.  I'm totally ignorant in areas most people know a lot about, and vice versa.  They are probably happier.    4951

@Odin:  Yeah.. I know what your saying and I didn't mean to imply that speculating was wrong. I think anything that gets young people interested in learning history is good and I commend you for having those conversations with your son. If more parents took the time to talk to their children about history our country would be better for itI have a pen pal that lives in the Czech Republic. We write fairly often and she tells me about her studies at the University in Ostrava. She was telling me that they are studying American history and she was telling me some of what she thought were interesting things about our history and I realized that this young Czech woman probably knew more about our history than many of our own young people.
