My neighbor just called me asking about a notice that he received from a company called American Water Resources of Texas. This was his first notice. They wanted him to buy an insurance policy (I can't remember what they actually called it but that's what it is) that covered water leaks in underground piping that could cost as much as ten thousand dollars to repair. (BS) My neighbor is no dummy. He made his living as (I think he said ) a Chemical Engineer but he is in his eighties. I can see why these bast*rds target the elderly. I told him to file it away for safe keeping in the trash can and when he receives the "This is your final notice" notice.. file it away in the same place. He understood what I was telling him but he still seemed uncertain. I explained that anything on the street side of his meter was the responsibility of the city and the underground pipe from his meter (about 70 feet) to the house was his responsibility. He still seemed uncertain so I told him that if he ever developed a leak on his side (very doubtful) that I would fix it. Finally he felt that he needn't worry about it. I wish those ********s that send that kind of stuff to people like my neighbor had those notices up their ****. This is not the first time someone has tried to bilk him and it's obvious that they are selective about who they send this crap to. I doubt any of you would get anything like this (you ain't old enough yet) but if you have elderly neighbors that you look out for be aware of these scams. 4951

I got a letter like that in the mail also and I am not elderly.  I am betting everyone in Kingwood got the same letter.  My son also got the same letter I did and he know longer lives at this address, not really that big of a deal just opened it up and put it through my paper shredder. I got the same letter last year and did the same thing with it.   4951

I didn't receive one so I assumed that it he was targeted. He called me because he was concerned that he needed to respond to them. It's still a scam so trash that sucker. 4951

Hmmm I may have some investment opportunities I want to discuss with him!On a different note-as my father gets up there in age, I have noticed more and more people and companies trying to take advantage of him. 4951

@Okiedokie: There's a good chance that they will try. They don't have to be stupid... just old and gullible. Look out for him.. there's a reason people like that target the elderly

Meter to the main going into the house Is yours. It should be pvc thats what mine is we replaced the valve and the drop down pipe. My house is 1979 the pvc still looked good. We put the channel locks on it to see if it was brittle. Its heavy schedule stuff, same with the sewer unless you have foundation problems. 4951

My dad died two years ago at 89.  In those last 10 years or so, my sister (who lived a few miles away) helped him go through his mail and pay his bills.  He was sharp enough to catch (and pitch) most scams, but he set aside anything else to go over it with my sister.  He avoided sales calls and other junk calls because he was mostly deaf (but could talk on the phone). If it was not somebody he knew on the phone, he just acted deafer than usual.  They always gave up pretty quick. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: That could be fun. I may try that the next time I get one of those irritating sales calls. I'll tell them to "speak up I'm hard of hearing" and then scream everything back at them like I want to make sure I heard them correctly.I got one at supper time, I told them that  if they will give me their home phone number and tell me what time they eat supper I'll call them back and we can talk about whatever they want. They hung up. :-)  I've actually been called rude by one guy. I told him.. you call me and interrupt what I'm doing to sell me something that I don't want or need.. and I'm rude?
