@SerenityNow: Â Harsh but in the right direction! Â Women on welfare for more than a year should get birth control implants. Â Men who don't support their children should be given a vasectomy. Â Failure to do so would result in a loss of government aid.If a person gets a job and gets off of welfare, both procedures could be removed.
@Retired_Engineer:
That looks good on paper, but many women have adverse reactions to those implants. It can cause a hormonal imbalance so severe, that the woman can become a real danger to her children. I would rather have one more baby born into poverty than a few more drowned in a bathtub.
Bottom line is that medical procedures being forced on any individual is unconstitutional. Free BC pills and other methods are already "offered" to women on welfare. This includes having tubes tied after delivery. Hoping they utilize the resource is really the most we can do. That said, the vasectomies are an excellent idea. They are much safer than tubaligations, and probably cheaper. But there are currently no such benefits offered to low income men. I bet many men would do it, not wanting to be caught up in paying child support that they can't afford.
@Mahm: Yeah, I was just tossing out ideas. I know those ideas wouldn't fly, but if it could, it would make a big difference!We offer the poor services like free condoms, birth control pills, and to get their tubes tied, but then we turn around and REWARD them for NOT doing these things by giving them more welfare money/benefits when they have another child.  I think that once a woman/man signs up for welfare, they should NOT get any more funds if she subsequently has more children. Take away the reward for behaving badly and encourage them to use the birth-control services provided. I also like the limit of one year for welfare. I would like to see it like unemployment benefits. You have to work to deserve a welfare credit. That credit only provides benefits for one year and then welfare stops. You can re-qualify for welfare again after you work for 5 years.Now, for the men. If they are not providing for their children, then they get a vasectomy and, if they don't have a job, they can work for the local/state government picking up trash, or cutting grass, etc. at minimum wage to at least provide some child care money.And last, but not least, welfare benefits should not exceed the equivalent of minimum wage. Several states are encouraging people to stay on welfare because it pays better than a minimum wage job.
