HOUSTON -
It turns out the red carpet for the Grammys isn’t reserved for celebrities, the uber wealthy and the Hollywood elite.
Texas Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee was spotted at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday rubbing shoulders with some of the industry’s heaviest hitters.
Her attendance with Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has reportedly created quite a stir on social media and is raising questions over who foot the bill. A staff member from Jackson Lee’s, Washington D.C., office tells KPRC2 the congresswoman paid for the trip out of her own pocket.
KPRC2 caught up with Jackson Lee who was back in Houston Monday, talking about the importance of the measles vaccination. When asked about the trip, she wouldn’t directly answer the question.
"I let my staff, they handle all of my information, and I let my staff handle it, and I will address the question," she said.
KPRC2 attempted to follow up with another question regarding the reported social media backlash. Some have sharply criticized the public elected officials, who are known as big proponents for income equality.
Glenn Rushing, Jackson Lee’s chief of staff, said politicians are invited every year to the Grammys by the event organizers, but this was Jackson Lee’s first time attending. He reiterated that Jackson Lee paid for the trip with her own money.
