Returning from vacation to find EVERY SINGLE pair of shoes chewed up really **** me off.They know they aren't supposed to chew anything unless it's given to them (they have plenty of chew toys). They were in the care of a relative, and the bedroom door was closed/latched tightly yet they still got in.I have a pair of sandals, and a pair of boots that were in my trunk that were spared. Plus the Toms I wore on vacation. Thinking about making a nice pair of dog leather/fur lined moccasins this week...And I am never getting another boxer or pit breed again. I've never had a pet that chewed, and it's not happening again!Guess it's shopping time. Sigh* 4951

No you don't... you love them and you're a little P.Oed right now but by this evening you'll be smoochin' the pooches again. Besides didn't you need a good excuse to buy some new stuff? They can be a real pain in the butt sometimes but we keep them around because we love them and wouldn't want to be without them. :-)P.S.     My son had three ferrets that he loved. I loved them too. Two of them got endocrine disease and the operations to save their lives was very expensive. At the time four thousand dollars (2 thou. each) was a lot of money and more than I had to spend. No matter how hard I tried to rationalize not doing it... I went into debt to save them. I think you love your dogs enough to forgive them. 4951

@Drekonix: Several. 9 or 10 last count. Honestly, I didn't wear half of them...but still...the other half I loved like little shoe-sized babies -_-

Mine get a pension for shoes now and again, too. The foster likes to chew on the laces. Holly just takes off with my flip-flops. And if shoes are left outside (without going into the shoe bin), then they end up in dark corners of the yard. Sometimes they survive, sometimes, they don't.

Annyoing, but what can you do? I'm sorry yours managed a way into your room and closet. Emoticon 4951

@drekonix I guess in retrospect I didn't have a ton of shoes to begin with. I really don't like shoe/purse shopping. Once I realize I haven't worn something in a while I donate or pass it on to a family member. 4951

That is terrible but I bet it was separation anxiety.

They know that when you put on your shoes, that means you are about to leave them. So, if they destroy the shoes you won't be able to leave them anymore.

That or they are just naughty! 4951

"Mine get a pension for shoes now and again, too."You have an account set aside to make periodic payments to your dogs, so they can buy shoes? 4951

@Elle10:  The next time you catch them doing something that is a no-no, pitch a conniption fit. I'm not sure exactly what a conniption is but I've heard it's a terrible sight to behold. It really does work. Believe it or not, your dog really wants to please you and the worst punishment isn't a swat on the butt, it's your reaction to disapproval of his behavior that they will remember. Many years ago I knew a man that trained retrievers. I had a Golden Retriever at the time but he said that it works with any dog. My golden loved to fetch a tennis ball but occasionally it would go into the street and he wouldn't hesitate to go after it. The trainer told me that the next time he starts to go into the street.. pitch a fit.. freak out.. make a fool of yourself and he will soon catch on that you do not want him in the street. It took two times and after that I could throw his ball in the street and he would run to the curb and stop. He never did it again. I'm not really sure if he wanted to please me or he just didn't want me to embarrass him in front of the neighbors again.

No reason to ever do that to a lab.  You simply say bad dog, calmly.  That is all it takes for them.They are brilliantly smart and know when you are not happy with them.  My dog would need therapy if I did that to him.

@Fallon: good point fallon....first rule is be smarter than the dog to train them otherwise the dog trains youelle...maybe you need a rack  or a cabinet for shoes in the closet where they can't reach them. somehow they got in your bedroom...hmmmmm

That's why 2 of mine are in crates when we leave the house ( not for vacay tho- they go to Holiday Kennel). Our old guy never gets into anything. I'll never have a dog that isn't crate trained- safer ( and cheaper)for them to be secured and I don't have to worry about them damaging anything. Sorry about your shoes tho- dogs live in the moment- they may "know" they should chew your shoes- but honestly shoes( and everything else) do look like chew toys when you're not around to redirect their behaviors. Get crates and train them to the crates. 4951
