Has anyone boarded their dog here. I recently had a an unfortunate experience here. I boarded my dog, Ladybug from the 20-31st. It was her first time being boarded. I informed the gal at the desk of this when I dropped her off. I called during the time she was boarded to check on her and was told she was doing well and eating good. When I picked her up today, I was told that everything including her bath and clipping nails went good. This surprised me as she doesn't like baths or getting her nails clipped. When I got home, I noticed how skinny she looked. I could see her rib bones and hip bones. She had diarrhea that was completely liquid. She refused eggs which she normally loves and her eyes looked bloodshot. She did not act her normal energetic self. I decided to take her to the vet. She is extremely dehydrated, has lost 5 pounds, and one of her liver enzymes is elevated due to her body kicking into starvation mode. She was given an antibiotic, probiotic, medicine for diarrhea, medicine for infection, and cans of food to mix with her other to get her eating again. I do not understand why I was told she was eating well when it is obvious she was not. I spent $350 at the vet in addition to the money I paid to Dog's Day Inn. I left an email relaying this and was contacted by Heather the manager. She said she had spoke with the girls that worked with my dog and that Ladybug didn't eat much the first 2 days but they mixed in wet food and she did great after that. I explained that this was impossible given her condition. She apologized and said she would be speaking with her manager that day and that the manager would probably be contacting me as well that day. It's been several days and no call. This does not seem right. I understand dogs can get stressed and may not eat like they normally do but they should have been honest and I really feel as though they should reimburse me for some of the cost.

Been to dogs day inn many times and never had a problem. Maybe your dog got sick same time you groomed her? Could be the dog stressed out being around strangers? I doubt the staff mistreated your dog and caused this. I don't work there so please don't accuse me of that. 4951

Never boarded there but did have a dog who didn't board well. She wouldn't eat and always ended up with diarrhea . We would board her at the vet so they could stay on top of things. The kennel should've stayed on top of things- but it doesn't surprise me that they didn't . Kennel staff is not highly technical position nor is it a well paid position and they care for so many animals at once that each animal doesn't get a lot of attention. This is not in defense of said kennel- this is the reality of all kennels. My Dd was a kennel tech at a vet when we first moved here. And I helped out during a hurricane ( hint- never ever board your pet during a hurricane- most of the staff evacuate too- leaving very few people behind to care for the animals!!!)
Having said that- I find that Holiday Kennels does a good job. It's just family that run it and they're very good with dogs- they know and understand them.
I suggest that perhaps your dog would be better off with an in home dog sitter. I have an excellant one I use for my old guy ( and cats and fish)because he is so old that kennels now stress him out. She comes 3 times a day. She is great and keeps me informed through texts daily. I can PM you her info if you want it 4951

You have to realize that some dogs do not acclimate as easily as others to being boarded and, away from mommy. Might be better to have a pet sitter come into the home three times a day next time. That way she doesn't have the stress of being away from her comfort zone. I've owned a show kennel for 36 years and know that each dog/puppy has different needs/likes. The Dogs Day Inn people should have noticed that she was stressed and acted accordingly; contacted you and her vet. Not unusual for some dogs to have stress liquid stools but that can turn into a deadly pancreatic attack if untreated. Next time, since you now know she is sensitive, get a pet sitter. 4951

We had the same thing happen at Pet Paradise off of Will Clayton. However our baby died about 5 hours after we picked him up. His organs were already shutting down when we had picked him up. He had lost half his body weight in one week. When we would call every other day to check in on him  Pet Paradise made it sound like he was having a blast. Won't ever do boarding again. Try dogvacay.com , that site looks pretty good.  4951

Lots of pets, especially older ones, get extremely stressed in kennel environments. They stop eating, get diarrhea, vomit etc. plus there's the issue of illnesses being passed around. That's why hiring an in home pet sitter has become the norm for lots of people. At the end of the day, it's safer for your pet, and can even be cheaper than boarding in situations where you have more than one pet.
I'm biased of course because I am a pet sitter. But i had to learn the hard way about kennels, just like most of my clients. 4951

@naptownkid: I had an issue with the Humble location... They actually lied and tried ot cover up an injury my dog sustatined when being groomed...  It was a nightmare... never went back....   To me it does not matter if you dog had a stress reaction or not they should have been honest when you called.

Isn't this the same place that lost someone's dog last year or late 2013?  They've never had a good reputation.  My dog loves going to Holiday Kennels and I can't say enough good things about the owners. 4951

I've used Holiday Kennels many times for my dog. It doesn't look fancy, but Dot loves it. She actually tries to jump over the half door they take you through to get into the kennel area. She pants and rubs up against the ladies there so I can tell she loves it. She generally eats less when she's away from home, but she's never come home ill or dehydrated. Again, it's not the fanciest place, but i feel safe leaving my dog there. 4951

@sh56: I have also heard bad things about DDI, although I have never used them.  Agree about Holiday.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I love Holliday in Porter but they were on their annual vacation during this time so I thought I'd give Dogs Day Inn a shot. I do understand that boarding can be stressful but I do believe they should have been honest. I feel terrible that I thought my dog was doing great when in actuality she was really struggling. I like the pet sitter option. I think I'll try that next time. 4951
