Much to local union hall's surprise, the national USW union has called a strike.  4951

I was always staff, so we were trained to take over in case of a strike.  It was hard to see friends walking the picket line. 4951

Agreed, but it was their decision. 4951

@ET:  Yes, but in some cases (like this one), it was NOT their decision to strike.

They agreed to be part of the union - that was the decision I was referring to.  The cost of allowing others to decide your future. 4951

@Stealth83:  Are you union or staff?  If union, I hope it's a short one and that you are financially OK.  If staff, you'll be putting in long hours and will probably be locked in for a while.  Neither is fun. 4951

@ET: My father was a Union steward at Kaiser Aluminum for several years.  He grew to hate it because he had to defend and represent ***holes that he felt should have been fired.  He quit the Steward job.  He remained a member of the union because he had to (closed shop), but he was never again a strong union supporter.I was on a special assignment when our refinery went on strike (a long time ago).  It lasted about three months and the pay increase they finally got took many years to make up for the pay lost during the strike. While unions helped improve workers pay and work coditions in the early 1900s, they are becoming irrelevant today.  They try to use safety and enviromental issues as a negotiating tactic, but there are enough safety and environmental agencies already doing that.  Their real objective is pay and benefit INCREASES. They are never willing to give up any previous gain.  As a result, they are pricing themselves out of jobs.  Many industries are shifting to non-union contractors to avoid dealing with unions.

My ex works at one of the striking plants.  So, at the moment, no child support and uncertainty over the health insurance for the kids.  Thankfully, I work and can take care of everything with a bit of belt-tightening.  It's a tough situation for all involved, but I've seen the requests from the union and have gone through three other contract negotiations and seen benefits get cut each time and working conditions decline.  What is being requested is not in any way excessive.  4951

Gas went up 6 cents overnight when they called the strike on the weekend.

Very little chance this strike that was called at 12:01AM Sunday morning had little to do with the price of gas. I work for a major refinery in Houston that is on strike. The issue with OT is forced OT. I just read that Lyondell Basell was/is the leader of the pack.  I guess their list of grievances is far longer than the other refinery's/plants etc... 4951

@tatertot58:  I agree that there will be little, if any, effect on the price of gas unless someone panics.  Most Refineries are now so automated, it's easy for staff members to take over and run the refinery just fine.  History has shown that the supply of gas stays steady during strikes.OT has been an off and on again issue for a long time.  The Unions don't want companies to use maintenance contractors for OT, but then they complain when they get forced to work OT.  However, this strike was called by the national USW, so it has nothing to do with any local issues.

I am pretty sure Shell is driving the bus on national negotiations. 4951
