I was at HEB yesterday and saw some ORGANIC chicken eggs.So I asked the fella stackin them "Don't they still come out of a chikens buttzzz' so whats the difference? He was the egg guy and had no clue......But in case any of ya are wondering....Chickens DO lay eggs out of their anus! But, it’s not as bad as you think.Figure 1The egg, poop and urine (which for a chicken isn’t a liquid) exits out of the same hole (aka, the vent, as you can see in figure 1).  BUT, when an egg comes out, the chicken’s Cloaca is turned inside out so that the egg cannot come in contact with the intestines (fecal matter nastiness).  Here’s a link for the whole story.Figure 2I’m happy to report that egg laying is not a bad design. Chicken poop does not come in contact with eggs, unless a chicken decides to walk in it and then put her talons (that makes me think of Napoleon Dynamite) on her eggs.If you’re interested in keeping your own chickens the links below are a great place to start.See there , you learn sumthin every dayNow go fix up some bacon n eggs! 4951

Well as a kid we used to raise chickens (mostly for eggs, but I did have to butcher a few now and again) and occasionally you would get an egg with poop on it. And there was not any in the nesting area where it was laid, and it was not in the shape or smeared like they stepped in it and used their feet to move the egg.We would just wash it off, besides the shell is designed to protect the contents from things such as that. And if you never had fresh eggs right from a truly free range chicken, you are truly missing something. 4951

@FoFa: That's the way it was for me too FoFa. I remember as a little boy wondering how an egg was laid so one day I decided to find out. I waited for what seemed like forever but eventually she cackled, stood up and I was actually able to see the egg come out. Poop happens... but it's just on the shell, no big deal. If we had to **** a bowling ball, I'm sure we would poop a little too. :-)

Interesting article! I grew up on an egg farm in Converse, TX (outside of San Antonio) and saw many chickens lay eggs. We gathered, candled, weighed and sorted, then placed in cartons for sale at the stores. Poop on eggs was a regular ocurrence. (Chickens are the nastiest and dumbiest creatures on this earth, IMO.) I couldn't eat eggs for the longest time, just because of all that. But now I cannot wait till I can have egg-laying chickens again! Fresh eggs are the bomb! 4951

@Love2Run: My dad was the same way about eating chicken. He and my mom raised friers for many years.

My dad tried raising chickens, but switched to ducks instead.  He could easily buy chicken meat, but he couldn't buy duck meat.  We raised French ducks ( domesticated Mallards) and Mucovy ducks.Anyone who has ever plucked a chicken or duck knows there is only one hole in the back.  Now, guess how they mate! 4951

When I was in the 5th grade, I raised a turkey for 4H in our backyard.......I named her "Cujo"...  I do NOT know why.......Anywho, I was basically a turkey egg pimp......Peeps could not get enough of those fresh, large delicacies... P.S- I did NOT realize that the sponsor that purchased Cujo was going to ummm, basically cook and eat her........And when I found out, I still remember crying to my daddy, with my arms around his neck......So, he actually bought her back from the company that placed the winning bid, and we took her up to my pop's deer lease and released her....     ... I kid you not.....That my first, last, and only year in 4H.... 4951
