Update: The student was taken off life support and passed late last night. I encourage everyone in our community to show your love and support to the family and friends of this student during their time of mourning. Bacterial Meningitis has caused swelling which caused a hernia on his spine. The 15 year- old student at Kingwood High School is a Freshman, involved in Theater Arts. He has been sick for one week and it was thought to be flu symptoms at first. Yesterday, he slipped into a coma and is now on life support at Texas Childrens Hospital.Email from the School:Dear Parents,We are deeply saddened to share the news that one of our students was hospitalized today, Wednesday, January 28, with a preliminary diagnosis of Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacterial meningitis. Our thoughts and prayers are with this student's family due to the serious nature of his condition.It is only natural to become alarmed anytime one hears the word "meningitis," but it is important for you to know that this case is NOT Meningococcal Disease. While there are different types of meningitis, Meningococcal Disease is commonly recognized to be contagious and occur in epidemics. Meningococcal Disease is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacterial meningitis occurs when an infection spreads to the tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. It is not considered to put others at increased risk.We worked with the family to share information with you about this so that you would have facts and not rumors.Sincerely,Dr. Ted LandryPrincipal 4951

Terrible news. My daughter had bacterial meningitis when she was little and it was the most terrifying thing I've ever been through. She recovered fully. I hope he recovers fully as well.. 4951

This is scary. I had a 15 year old classmate in high school (1992) who slipped into a coma due to meningitis. Two weeks later her kidneys failed and she passed away. 4951

@zanne71:
Oh my gosh. His poor family. I had a professor in college that had a daughter do the same thing. High fever and headache were her only symptoms until she went into a coma.

Anytime your kids have a headache, ask them to nod and shake their heads. If there is pain or if they cant do it, then this is a medical emergency.

Ch 11 had the story as breaking news at 6:00, it did not say that the boy passed, but he is in critical condition.  The letter from Landry didn't say that he passed either.Could Zanne be talking of another child with meningitis?Prayers to him and his family, cannot even imagine what the family is going through. 4951
