Assuming you are not expecting to stay in the house forever, find a good realtor or someone who is from this area and take their advice as to resale points in the home and what people living in the area find attractive.  Your perspective coming from England will be way different than what people will want when it comes time to resell..   4951

Try this meet up group for British expats. It looks to be a pretty active group and you will get a lot of your questions answered.

@dustale08:  Welcome!  I've met a few Brits here (but no Welsh, Scots or Northern Irish, yet!).  You'll find that people in Kingwood come from all over the USA and from other countries.  It's actually pretty rare to find a Kingwood native.  Where are you from?I've always wanted to visit the UK.  So many historical sites there!

@dustale08:

That is a good website for housing in the greater Houston area. The zips in Kingwood are 77339 and 77345. 77346 is also in our area.

Remember that our area has pitiful mass transit options in comparison to the UK. If you have teens, you will likely be purchasing a vehicle for their use much earlier than if you were back home. 4951

@Annie:  Excellent point.  I had a coworker that transferred from The Hague.  Very few people there even had a vehicle (bicycles were the typical mode there).  His kids were young but he and his wife both needed vehicles here.  They lived in a nice big home here. When his assignment ended and he prepared to return home, he knew it would take some readjustment because their home in the Hague was a flat and less than a third of the size of their house here.It really depends on where our newcomer currently lives because the UK has very urban and very rural areas.

@dustale08: Don't get a split level home! They don't cool very well during the summer...and trust me, you'll find the summer harsh. And yes, join the UK Kingwood group. There are some great people.

www.har.com is GREAT. It lists most homes for sale, except those for sale privately.

Great schools, low crime.

Try to move any time other than the summer if you can. Summer will not give you a good first impression. I moved to texas in the dead heat of the summer and thought we would all strike out from the heat. It is no joke, outrageously hot. Like, walk from your house to your car and you are already dripping with sweat sort of hot.

I would recommend taking a Texas based defensive driving class online before moving. Where we moved from, pedestrians do NOT have right of way as they do here, and we sorta almost ran a couple people over while in the learning process.

Buy lots of bug spray. The mosquitoes are like straight out of the Amazon. They carry disease and the only thing I feel works is Avon's Bug Guard. So, get an Avon lady.

The roaches. Sweet Jesus in Heaven. Buy some wasp spray for them as these are HUGE tree roaches and they F L Y. Wasp spray can reach them from across the room. Also, a big, heavy book works wonders for squashing the hellions.

The trails here are GORGEOUS. Well, they can be. I find them to be one of the greatest selling points. You can walk or ride a bicycle, but watch where you step because ever so often you may be walking in the tracks of someone who lets their dog poop of the sidewalk.

Don't go to Walmart. If you have to, ONLY go to the small one actually located in Kingwood. The other local Walmarts are filled with crack heads and meth addicts.

There are about a million different churches to choose from. There are ten on each street just about. So, take your pick.

I am English.  Moved here 20 months ago .   English  credit ratings are not recognised here. Consequently we could not get a mortgage.  Had to purchase house,  vehicles and everything else with cash.  Any kind of credit rating unless built up in the USA is unacceptable. You have to build a credit rating whilst living in the USA. You don't say by what method you will be here on, visa, relative of an American or what.   Found it very tough initially.  I would suggest renting until you can build up your credit count.  Opening a bank account and getting a credit card but you will have a hard time doing that  that unless you have a Social Security number.  A Social Security Number will be your 'passport'.Please investigate the pros and cons financially before making the decison to move.  If everything is right for you then Kingwood is a wonderful place to live. Good Luck 4951

If buying used home insist on new appliances Whirlpool Kenmore are good but Hotpoint, Magic Chef, Jenn Air, Kitchenaid are top crust quality. Make sure the water heater is current rheem is the best a newer a/c will reduce electric costs in the summer Trane or Carrier will last a while. 4951

Worry more about what you want in a house than what someone else will want when you sell the house. 4951
