I am in my 40s and have gradually been losing my hair for a few years now. It is getting bad because all I feel is my scalp and I'm starting to notice my scalp if I pull my hair up. Let me just say my blood pressure is under control, my iron is fine, I take all the vitamins you can possibly think of, and no it is not hereditary.I went to my gyno lady years ago for this among other symptoms  thinking either thyroid or hormonal. Had the thyroid test done along with an ultrasound. No thyroid issues. Hormones off so I was put on a very low dose birth control. Now my teenage daughter is also losing her hair. I was thinking our hormones are out of whack together maybe. I went to gyno doctor last week for a checkup and she says it is not hormonal because the birth control I take cancels that out. I don't get it. Also all she suggested was to take more vitamins and use minoxidal . Gee thanks! Anyway I need to figure  who and what type of doctor to go see. My daughter is too young to suffer hair loss. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am ready to start making appointments before we are completely bald. 4951

What about the Kingwood Wellness Center? I know they treat hormonal issues. I would probably start with them first bc everything I've read regarding hair loss has to do with either low protein levels or hormone issues.

I think the first link might to prove to be most helpful. Best of luck!

A woman in my family suffers from hair loss. She was told stress has a lot to do with it, which then becomes a vicious cycle since the fact that she is losing hair stresses her out. Hormones were also brought up and the fact that she has been dyeing her hair for over 40 years. I personally don't believe synthetic vitamins help in any way, but collagen could help if you're not taking it.  4951

@rena:

Have you thought about an allergy to something in shampoos? Even if you switched it could be something that is common in most. You and your daughter may have developed the same allergy, not uncommon. It could also be a sensitivity to something in the water. Since its both of you I would look for a common thread. It sounds like you have the medical stuff checked and taken care of. Just from what you've said I would not think it's a vitamin issue.

I've been grasping at straws about an eye issue for two years and spent thousands at different doctors. If you do find a doc that has an answer, pass along the name. 4951

I'd find an endocrinologist. I had that in my mid 30's and thyroid came back ok- it always does. BUT years later I was at MD Anderson and the ultrasound on my neck showed nodes on my thyroid. Very common especially for middle aged women- the docs said it indicated that at some point I was having thyroid issues- even though the tests kept coming back "within range". About 5 years after my hysterectomy my hair started growing back in which leads me to believe it was indeed hormonal 4951
