I told the kids around 2:00 yesterday afternoon, "Tomorrow is going to be a pretty day. If you want to go outside to play with your friends, both of your rooms have to be clean." It is almost 4:00. I tried to motivate them off the couch at 10 am, and I have given them a warning every hour about how many hours of daylight are left, and they are STILL working on DD's room. They just called me to come inspect it, and they had blankets laid out on the floor like rugs, but they insisted it wasn't done for the purpose of hiding all of the craft beads, rainbow loom bands and barbie shoes that were all over the floor. SMH. I gave them fair warning and they made their choice. So why do I feel guilty? 4951

I don't think it's guilt you feel - just frustration bc you know you're going To be dealing with whining later about how they didn't go outside. 😡 plus, you know the fresh air would definitely benefit them and they would crash early tonight!

Hang in there Momma - you know you're doing the right thing! They can try again tomorrow. 4951

@ctl74:

Thank you. They just finally finished and went outside with the rootbeer floats I picked up for them 3 hours ago at Culver's. Another motivational tactic that fell flat. I just really thought that by the time I came home from running errands, they would be done. But they had decided to tear the room apart to reorganize, which I didn't ask them to do (and they did to DS's room last night). They need to save that stuff for a bad weather day! Sometimes kid logic isn't so logical. I'm glad, at least, most of their friends play outside on Sunday, and do family outings on Saturday. 4951

Maybe they'll learn to keep their rooms a little neater.  It only takes a minute each time to put things in their place.  It takes a whole day to clean when things haven't been in their place for weeks. 4951

Your a mean mom for holding a beautifully good day, like today, over their heads. why didn't you make them do it on all the rainy days before this one?

Don't be surprised when you end up in a nursing home. 4951

A parents job is to set an example for their kids and to teach them manners, respect, and discipline.  It is NOT a parent's job to be their kid's best friends.  If you do your job well, then when your kids are grown and independent, then you can be their friend.If my kids didn't do what they were told and expected to do, they lost privileges.... and just about everything was a privilege.  I never felt guilty taking away a privilege.  Why should I?  I was not the one that acted poorly.  I often told my kids I always love them, but I don't always love some of the things they do (or don't do).Taking away privileges is much better motivation than bribery. 4951

@Mahm:
HA - I am TRULY the Meanest MOM alive or dead. I would've delivered that ultimatum - yesterday. " Get 'er done by 8:00AM Sat OR you spend ALL day Sat cleaning - yeah I was mean like that!! Guilt??? Well there's wine for that. Ask me about "Mom's Boot Camp"- DD knew better than push the envelope - DS was a 2 trial learner. Let's just say he BEGGED for in school suspension over Mom's Bootcamp. Emoticon. My house and yard was never cleaner.
Do NOT feel guilty- kids really really need boundaries AND they need to learn respect- you have to mean it

I'm meaner.

I tell the kids they have twenty minutes too clean up. I set the timer. After the timer beeps, anything and everything goes into a trash bag that is kept in the garage until they have cleaned everything a following day without problem.

They aren't even in school yet, so even the young ones move quickly when highly motivated. 4951
