Agree 100%.  No consequences basically tells these people that what they are doing is just not a big deal. 4951

you are misinterpreting the whys of the story. the fact is that there are consequences but the judicial system has a lagtime because it is BUSY. people get arrested and charged and out on bail prior to a trial. there is no guarantee a person will not commit a new act that will cause them to be arrested prior to their trial. 4951

or that the police knowing all of this had to actually wait until these wonderful sons broke in to someone's car even after following them around casing the guy.

@Stealth83:  The cops acted appropriately.  Following someone is not a crime (and difficult to prove anyway).  But by catching them in the act of breaking into the car, they now have ANOTHER felony to charge them with.  Hopefully, they will eventually serve long sentences.   Also, if they had attempted to rob the guy, the police  would have been ready to act.Sickening that some people are criminals and sickening that our courts and jails take so long to go to trial, and allow people early parole because the jails are crowded.

Death penalty will help population in prison controlled. Thieves will less likely to react if they give death penalty for stealing. 4951

The death penalty is a struggle for known murders, you don't have much chance for stealing.  That and you can never be quite sure that the Texas prosecutor hasn't railroaded an innocent man.Maybe lopping off a few fingers would be suitable deterrent? 4951

@snowrun: funny...it didn't seem to help much in the past. in the era of charles dickens, the death penalty was levied for a laundry list of crimes including stealing food. children as young as 7 were hung for stealing bread yet crime was rampant.

I wish our president would take a tougher stance on Crime, especially in the black community. He tends to turn a blind eye. Since he has been in office the country has been more dependent on government funding. I don't know if crime rates have risen under his terms in office but it seems like our area has risen in crime over the last 6 years.

Is the solution more prisons which could mean more jobs in construction and guards

@Stealth83: Here are some of MY opinions on possible changes:1.  Instead of building more jails, create tent cities (like Sheriff Arpaio in Arizona).2. Adopt many of Sheriff Arpaio's policies for prisoners.3. Offer opportunities for prisoners to earn rehabilitation, but the primary role of prison is isolation and punishment.4. Bring back hard labor for violent offenders.5.  Enforce "Three Strikes".  Commit three high-level or violent felonies and you get life in prison.6.  Make early release harder to earn for violent offenders.7. Recidivist get longer terms with hard labor and no early release. Some people will cry that these things violate the Civil Rights of the prisoners.  But the prisoners violated the Civil Rights of their victims, so once convicted, the prisoner loses his/hers Civil Rights until they are released.I also think that marijuana should be legalized and current prisoners convicted for possession should be freed.

@Stealth83: Unfortunately a privately operated prison is a sound business these days and a lot of petty crime keeps these prison full, it's a vicious cycle. Someone gets arrested for carrying a joint in his or her pocket and they can say goodbye to any kind of job. The alternative is what is known as "fast money" and this often means committing a crime to get it. True there are people who refuse to work under any circumstances but there are also those who prefer the dignity of a job but a criminal record makes that difficult.   4951

@Stealth83: not really. part of the crime rate is demographics. the crime rate is driven by young males, those between 17 and 34 during the 60s, the baby boom created a great bulge in the crime rate. people screamed about it. prisons were filled and it didn't drop until those in that 17 to 34 group aged beyond 34 at which time multitudes of chiefs and prosecutors and others took credit for a drop in crime. then as the children of the boomers hit the 17 to 34 grouping the crime rate rose again. the pattern was repeated and repeated again for the grandchildren of the boomers which is where we are now. part of the problem can be alleviated by better education and better job opportunities and part by time. beware of creating new problems trying to solve old problems. many states and counties have discovered the bond issues to build prisons outlast the actual need for those prisons even tho once they are built the tendency is to fill them even when it is not necessary. i.e. to justify the existence by making sure they are filled and being able to brag about being tough on crime. if incarceration deterred crime, we should be the most crime free country in the world. we have a higher percentage of our population in prison than any other country in the world. aand remember..the guy who steals 30 bucks goes to prison..the guy who steals your pension doesn't
