Potty training has to be one of the hardest things to do as a parent.
My little girl started pooping on the floor. I managed to rush her to the potty to finish. While wiping her butt she decides to smear poop on her potty seat! Fun fun. Then when I got her and the potty clean I go back to clean her orginal accident on the floor only to find the dogs ate it! Gag me!

@foxymama: I guess we were lucky.  Both our boys picked it up right away, before they were 2, and only had a couple nighttime accidents when they were sick.  Luckily never any poop incidents.  No advice here, just remembering those "good old days"!

Potty training was not fun.  She wouldn't poop in the toilet only pee.  I ended up cutting a hole in the diaper and letting her sit on the pot and poop thru the hole.  It worked.  Good luck because I know it's hard and stinks but hang in there. 4951

I tried potty training my daughter at 18 months (family peer pressure) and she just wasn't ready. She got confused about it and started taking off her diaper and pooping on the floor, so I put her back in diapers and said "We are not ready for this right now."  I tried her again at 24 months and she totally understood at that point what she was supposed to do and never even had an accident. It's easy if they are ready and they understand what needs to happen and where. Emoticon 4951

.....I've been told on numerous occasions by my mother-in-law, that when my husband was  potty training, he would only "make a tee-tee in the potty".......And that he'd always go by their couch and squat down to pooh....  ..So, when she saw him bent down by the family sofa, she knew he was droppin' it like it's hot... 4951

Our first two girls were in panties 100% of the time by 2 years old. That wasn't even close to the case with the youngest. Her biggest problem was she has a strong bladder, so she would only go once during the day and then while she slept at night. We tried everything, and had all but given up by the time her 4th birthday rolled around. Well, we took her in for her 4-year checkup and told the doctor that she was struggling with potty training. He told her(in his kookie, silly voice) that she was a big girl now and had to put the pee-pees & poo-poos in the toilet. She said ok, and that was that...Literally. She hasn't had an accident, or relapsed the least bit since that day. We're still shocked over the whole thing, but I guess she REALLY loves her doctor...Or it just took someone else talking to her about it?! I hope you get it figured out soon. I know it's frustrating. Best of luck.  4951

@cgm10sne1: Never thought I would have one but I did and unfortunately potty training was involved.  She was actually potty trained before she was 2.  Family was visiting during the holidays that year and went to the mall and didn't remember to ask if she needed to go.  At that age they need to be reminded and put on the toilet a lot.  It took another 4 months for it to work and about 6 months after she was completely potty trained it was Halloween and she had 2 accidents while we were at a party.  I think she was just so concerned about missing something that she didn't want to stop and go.  That was our only accident thank god. I have a friend that trained her son while walking the dog.  Every time the dog went pee on a tree so did her son.  For almost a year he would run in the backyard in the morning and pee on a tree.  When he was 5 he was still doing this.  When cars driving by started looking at them funny she finally had to make him stop.  They say boys are harder and take longer.  I think it's true.  My DD and her cousin are 6 months apart.  He is older and she was potty trained first.  Our issue now is the thumb sucking.  She will be 10 Sunday and still does it.  They took his binky away and that was it.  Anyone have any advise on thumb sucking.  We have tried taping dirty socks on her hand, putting band aids on her thumb, hot sauce, nasty tasting nail polish and nothing works.  TIA for any help on this subject and again, good luck on the potty training.  Seriously don't give up.

So glad I didn't see this thread until AFTER dinner. Yes, potty training is very difficult, especially getting boys to "go" on the potty. I don't think I saw as much "poo" detail in two years of changing diapers as I have read here. 4951

Time for a drink!!! I remember I started loving wine about the time potty training started. My fav story involves my son.

So dh was turning 40-And I was planning a surprise party for him. Got it all set up- we went to his brother's house for dinner( we were BFF's with him and his wife- our kids were all close in age). They were in on it but we ( me, brother in law and sister in law) couldn't figure out a good early departure excuse for us ( hubby, me and kids) to back to our house- where lots of family and friends were waiting. NO problem- my son provided an excuse! He takes out every single toy in my nephew's toy box and proceeds to #2 in it- then my nephew, my dd and my niece come tearing into the room and tell on him! I am mortified until I catch my sister in law's eye!!! So I continue to be outraged- clean the mess up- insist on going home- NOW! We went home- hubby got totally surprised and to this day we laugh about my son's potty training "accident"
He was almost impossible to potty train!! I've had better luck with puppies and dogs!!!! 4951

I remember when I was potty training the only issue was waiting until I was big enough to use the regular seat.  My parents bought some kind of add-on so I could fit on it. 4951

@FoFa: We used the bite-sized Twix and called it "special candy." He only got one when he would go poo in the potty, properly, and no other time. We didn't have any issues with tinkles, so no bribing was necessary. There was no shaming or disappointment shown when he didn't follow through properly. Instead it was strictly reward-based, and positive reinforcement. Reward the correct and praise the effort but learn from the missed opportunity.
