Since October, doctors are writing very few prescriptions for hydrocodone or other strong opioids.  This is because of new rules by the DEA in an attempt to reduce availability of this widely misused drug.  Doctors are moving to codeine/acetaminophen combinations, which don't work as well but are less additive.  Codeine is also an opioid but is not as strong as hydrocodone.http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidkroll/2014/08/22/what-you-need-to-know-about-new-restrictions-on-hydrocodone-combinations/ 4951

I just don't understand using those for something besides real physical pain. I took several hydrocodone every day for months in 06, prior to back surgery. After the surgery, I was given Percocet. I didn't finish them. I was so happy to be free from the pain and free from popping pills all day long. I never felt any kind of high or sense of euphoria while taking them. Just reduced pain. 4951

After suffering from migraines all my life and after brain surgery the only pain med that actually worked and I never had an addiction feeling or high was dorvecet (sp). The fda removed it from the market because some idiots abused it. Now there hasn't been found anything that stops or helps my pain fully other than sleep. It's such a shame that our government is aways making the innocent suffer because of the guilty 4951

A lot of people become addicted to pain meds. My neighbor is a pain pill junkie and she stays mildly ****ed up all of the time. She claims chronic pain but it's fairly obvious that she is addicted to the pills. I've known of others and they usually become addicted after prolonged periods of recovery from major injuries. I understand why doctors are reluctant to write prescriptions for some pain medications but I think some go a little overboard with it. When my dad was dieing from cancer the doctor refused to give him a pain medication that worked well for him because he might become addicted to it. I never understood that kind of logic. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: I had to jump through hoops for my insurance company and pharmacy to get the codeine laced cough med.  It almost wasn't worth it, especially when I learned it wasn't covered

Hydrocodone makes me sick. No way I would take it for fun. 4951

@Okiedokie, wow no coverage for cough meds with codeine, that's about all that works when you get a wicked cough.

Took hubby to Urgent care, signs in the room said they wouldn't prescribe certain pain meds at all. I can appreciate they are trying to reduce addiction and drug seeking, but what if you really need one of those types of drugs? In general I hate pain pills, they give me a headache and make me smell funny. Only take them out of necessity. 4951

I never liked hydrocodone because it was so strong.  Usually half a pill would ease the pain but it would put me to sleep.If they did such a thorough audit, why didn't they just weed out the doctors/PAs/NPs that wrote most of the prescriptions and deal with the people abusing them?I personally have to be in major pain before I take a pain pill.  My mother and younger sister were addicted to pain pills.  They shopped around and found doctors that would write them prescriptions.  My mother died of complications from meds.  My sister died from mixing pain pills and booze.  She choked to death on her own vomit.Pain pills are wonderful for those who really need them, but some people will abuse them. 4951

@Retired_Engineer:
That is so sad. I'm sorry for your loss. How long ago was that?

I noticed they gave me the codeine/acetaminophen combination after labor and delivery. It sucked.

If there were a way to check patient history for abuse, that would be helpful too.

@Okiedokie:  That's funny. I've been given hycrocodone cough syrup twice recently.  Perhaps the amount is smaller that what is being highly controlled and limited.  My cough finally went away after many weeks, but truth be told, I think it was the constant stream of Albuterol inhaler use, Mucinex DM and allergy meds that finally did it.  4951

@FoFa...My mother-in-law has MS.......I had absolutely NO idea or clue about your wife, FoF.... ...It is indeed, a completely wicked, horrific, debilitating disease......And with that being said, I remembered that you inquired about a lift being added to a vehicle a week or so ago, and in-fact, my father-in-law recently had a winch / lift added to his Nissan Frontier to accommodate my mother-in-law's Jazzy Scooter......Both the Jazzy Scooter, as well as the lift on the truck, have been WELL WORTH the money spent......It's given my mother-in-law a new sense of freedom, since she's not dependent on my father-in-law pushing her in her wheelchair everywhere...  And hence, he also has a lil freedom of his own...     ....It's definitely made "going out" so much more easier on everyone.......I will most gladly get you the info / details on the lift if you're ever interested, my friend...  4951

@herron1345: We are in quandary as to what course of action to take right now.
She has a scooter, and we have a handicapped van with a ramp.But it is getting increasingly difficult for her to transfer from her wheelchair to the scooter or scooter to van seat.So yes, please shoot that info, and where he had it done if you know.Please 4951

....Pertaining to this thread, I am NOT at all one for prescription pills........I literally have a stash in our pantry of unused  Pain Killers, Muscle Relaxers, Codeine Cough Syrup, etc etc, that the hubbs and I have been prescribed over the years....(And obviously, never used...)....I personally stick with good ole Baby Aspirin (if need be) , vitamins, natural supplements, and Mary Jane....
