Texas is more diverse than it was during the 80s oil bust.  It will be a hit, but not as devastating as before. 4951

HOUSTON – Oil field giant Schlumberger said Thursday it will cut approximately 9,000 employees – around 7.5 percent of its workforce around the globe – as both petroleum prices and oil-company spending nosedive.Schlumberger’s profits fell 82 percent in the fourth quarter as it wrote down $1.7 billion in assets. It said it recorded a $296 million charge related to its headcount reduction.“It’s very unfortunate, but this is definitely not going to be the last headcount reduction in 2015 in the energy space,” said Rob Desai, an analyst with Edward Jones. “The goal is to position the company to come out of this downturn stronger.”The oil-tool maker banked $302 million, or 23 cents a share, in net income in the October-December period, compared to $1.66 billion, or $1.26 a share, in the same period in 2013. Its revenues were up from $11.9 billion to $12.6 billion.The job reductions began in the fourth quarter and are expected to be completed later this year, Schlumberger spokesman Stephen Harris said in an email.Traders reversed a large portion of Wednesday’s rally in crude oil. Futures for international Brent crude fell $1.02 to $47.67 per barrel on London’s ICE Futures Europe market. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate fell $2.23 to $46.25 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. 4951

It will be a hit, but not as devastating as before. Was up north for that one, but we found it pretty interesting after the "drive 70, freeze a Yankee" statements. 4951

so sad, as much as I love paying tons less to fill my tank, I feel so terrible about people loosing jobs over it!  Now i feel guilty about spending about $30 instead of $80 (just a few months ago) per tank 4951

I heard a lady at Target today tell the checker that anyone that works could be laid off no matter where you work

@silly123: they are closing 133 targets but only in Canada.  Due to them having a HUGE export fee to pay for merchandise and the canadians aren't happy with the price difference.Dont know of them laying off or closing any US stores.    But then again this time of year all retail lays off many due to holidays over.  Now Home Depot and Lowe's are hiring like mad to start their seasonal season.(edited to ad) sorry misread your statement.. and 100% true that!   Nothing in life is a guarantee.  I have had many friends and clients of all ages and all stages of careers be laid off.  Some were even CEO's of companies.

Damn, bet I'll be looking for a job, Schlumberger lays off everyone over 55 just for starters, or so rumor control says.And it's all up to HR, no managers can save you.Only senior management over 55 is safe, or so rumor control says. 4951

@silly123:

It is true. And to be laid off is lucky compared to fired due to at-will status that most states have.

After having survived a layoff before (after believing "it would never happen to me"), I don't stress about it. It's out of my control!!! 4951
