If you use insurance to get one, they will probably only have one machine they support.  You can buy a CPAP machine without a prescription.  When I get to my PC, I will send you a link. 4951

The one my husband uses has a removable memory card that tracks his sleep cycles. When he goes to see his doctor, he simply carries in the card to be evaluated.

There are some that allow for battery backup. He doesn't have that but I see it being a plus for airline travel since not all seats have power plugs. 4951

My hubby has one that it totally silent and just a small nose piece, not the whole mask.  It has made our life so much nicer now that I can sleep.  The brand he has is Fisher & Paykel.  Our insurance paid for it all after his sleep study.  Hope this helps.  Emoticon 4951

@foxymama:  In Oct 2013, my CPAP machine stopped working.  I had had it for about 2-3 years.  I took it back to the supplier HMHH (Hermann Memorial Home Health) to see if they could repair it or replace it.  They no longer repair CPAPs but sent me to a repair shop.  The repair shop was backed up for weeks.  HMHH notified my doctor to arrange for a replacement.  Something got messed up between them and the doctors office.  After about a week without my CPAP machine, I was not sleeping and was getting extremely frustrated.  I went online and bought one almost identical to the one I had. Phillips Respironics System One REMstar Pro CPAP Machine with C-Flex Plus with Humidifier (DS450HS, 450S)  = $429.00I bought it and had it overnighted to me.  The mess with the doctor's office eventually got straightened out (a nurse lost the message!) and HMHH sent me a replacement.  I now use the one they sent me and I keep the one I bought packed for whenever we go out of town.  It will also act as a spare if/when the HMHH supplied machine dies.  Once you get used to sleeping with a CPAP, it is hard to do without it.The place I bought the machine was www.respshop.com/All Phillips Respironics come with a memory card to record your breathing patterns and if you have any significant leaks.BTW, HMHH charged my insurance almost $1200 for the same machine.  Of course, that doesn't mean my insurance paid that much.  They only pay what they contracted to pay..... and I don't know what that was. 4951

My husband's is also very quiet. He has just the "nasal pillows" making connection. He didn't care for the full mask.

I do keep a large stuffed animal to block the "wind" coming from his exhaust. That is my only gripe. It is 100000000000 times better than when he snore like a freight train. 4951

@Annie:  Same thing here.  The masks all pinched the bridge of my nose, making it hard to breathe.  I use the "pillows" even though I have no idea why they call them that!  The vented air from the pillows does bother my wife so I try to "aim" away from her but she also keeps a pillow handy to block the air if I move my head.I very rarely snore now and I get a much better night's sleep.

I like my older Respironics way better than my newer one.It has 5 level to the humidifier, 1 uses hardly any water and leaves my mouth/nose dry, 2 uses all the water in 5 hours and I get a terrible plastic smell.Don't know what good 3-5 are however.At least on my older one I could set it in between, so 2 3/4 was good for 8 hours with just a little water left in the resivoir   4951

Thanks for all the tips.  I need to call my insurance and see what they cover.  All i know is i don't want to go through Duke Medical.  They are screwing my DH up the butt.  I am hoping i can just buy one online and they will reimeburse me some or all. 4951

@foxymama:

You will really appreciate it once you get started. Hubby could simply sit down and fall asleep he was so poorly rested before CPAP. He even feared getting fired from a new job he was so fatigued. Within days, he said he felt a significant improvement. 4951

Anybody use the SoClean machine? I got sick from my CPAP already. Makes it hard to sleep with my mouth closed. Even tried a mask that covers my mouth but then my nose kept running. Very Frustrating.

@foxymama: I am following this thread because I, too have an RX for a CPCP, but due to the $$$ haven't made the purchase. My insurance doesn't pay for it. The one RE has sounds good. FoFa has freaked me out about the plastic smell...ick! I want a quiet one, too.
