Poor Tay has a stye that just won't go away on it's own...or with the antibiotic ointment. We saw someone here today that suggests having it surgically removed. The wait time is over a month since there's only 1 dr that does it out here.

I think coming back to Houston for a second opinion and possible procedure is my best option.

Anyone have any experience with this, or know of a good pediatric ophthalmologist?? 4951

@Taramay
We use Dr David Coates with TCH. He did eye surgery on my daughter twice. We were very pleased with the whole process.

We did receive several recommendations for local ophthalmologists, but the Texas Children's system is unbeatable.

Dr Coates has several satellite offices & it all worked out great.

The first time my princess had the eye surgery she was 2 and they took excellent care of her, I felt very comfortable with them taking her off to surgery.
Her second surgery was this past summer. Since she was 17, she thought that maybe she was too old for TCH, with all the little ones in the playroom. 4951

That's great to hear! I'm trying to keep things in perspective...but I've (again) cried several times today just thinking of my perfect little baby having to go through surgery. Even though it should be a very quick and easy procedure.

She is still considered a patient at Texas Children's in Kingwood. So hopefully they'll be able to get us hooked up with someone great. 4951

The procedure was pretty quick, maybe 30 minutes tops.It was a bit overwhelming in the waiting room, because there were so many children there that were having far more extensive surgeries than my daughter was having. That did kind of put things in perspective for us.When I was little, I had numerous heart procedures at TCH, so it was a little weird being in the same place with my child.  Lots of memories came flooding back. 4951

Hi @taramay. My dd (now 4) started getting stubborn styes when she was about 2, and they would stick around forever. Although we were given antibiotic ointment, it didn't help much. Warm compresses help the most... (They still come & go, but Dr says she'll eventually grow out of it). Her opthalmologist is also through TX Children's. His name escapes me atm... He didn't want to resort to surgery simply b/c for her, it will probably be ongoing anyway (at least while she's young). Styes come & go for her. The longest she's ever had one was about 5 months (No Joke!)and I hated that for her. Hers are due to blepharitis, which I am certain came on after an eye infection she caught at a daycare! Grrr...
Hopefully your dd won't have to deal with this ongoing, but at least the Dr might have answers.

In short, I agree with the other poster... TX Children's Emoticon 4951

No suggestions on doc but curious if you tried washing with baby shampoo and lots of warm compresses.

@Annie:

We have. It's hard to manage her though. She fights so hard that even DH and I together have a really hard time holding her down. I'm going to try out some new tactics tomorrow and see if it helps.

I got styes all the time when I was younger. It sucked. I'm hoping she doesn't have to deal with the same thing. 4951

My mom could do just about anything to me as a child if she did it while massaging my scalp or scratching my back. Diversions are good.

I'm going to try the phone. She's obsessed with it. So hopefully that will help. 4951

Will she sing songs with you? Mom used them as all sorts of distractions/time passers. I was definitely high maintenance as a kiddo. ( and hubby would say it continues. ..) 4951

Sometimes. She's better at doing that while in the rocking chair with my mom. Not me so much. Haha!

But that is a good idea. I'll try doing that before nap and bedtime, while she's sleepy. 4951

perhaps you could just start washing her hair daily with baby shampoo and include the eye lashes and brows?  would she do that part herself and thus be in control?  I know you have to do the daily washings for quite a while, but the baby shampoo does not hurt or burn....good luck 4951
