Homemade Krispy Kremes — Yes, this is the actual recipe! You'll want to share this one or tag yourself to save it!Ingredients3 tablespoons milk3 tablespoons boiling water1 teaspoon dry active yeast8 ounces all-purpose flour ( a little under 2 cups, I recommend you measure and weigh. See my note above)1 1/2 ounces sugar ( about 3 tablespoons)1 egg1 ounce butter, cold to room temperature1 dash saltoilGlaze1/3 cup butter2 cups confectioners' sugar1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla4 tablespoons hot water ( or as needed)DirectionsIn a large measuring jug, combine the milk and boiling water. Add a teaspoon of the sugar and the yeast. Stir it gently, then leave it in a warm place for the yeast to activate (aka foam). In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, the rest of the sugar, and the salt. Cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry blender, until it resembles crumbs.Add the egg (give it a quick beat) and yeast mixture to the flour mix, and mix into a smooth dough. This usually takes about 5 minutes of mixing.Turn the dough out onto a lightly-floured counter and knead for about 5 to 10 minutes—it should feel springy and little bubbles should form under the surface. Place it back in the bowl, cover with a cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise for about an hour until double in size.Once risen, place the dough onto the counter and cut it into 4 pieces. One piece at a time, stretch it into a long rope about an inch to an inch and a half wide. Cut strips about an inch long, ball em up with your hands, and place them on a baking tray or wire rack to wait.Cover the doughnuts holes with a cloth to rise while you heat the oil to 375°F.Place the doughnuts into the oil and fry until golden brown on each side, about 2 minutes. Be sure to fry only a few at a time so they don’t overcrowd and stick together.Drain on a paper towel or wire rack over a cloth, before glazing them. Be sure to glaze them warm, or else they won’t get that delicious coverage! 4951

I bought some KKs when we were in El Paso over the holidays; wife was craving donuts. No thanks! I'll take Shipley's over KK any day!! 4951

Really, the warm KKs can not be beat.  After that they are fairly pedestrian.  Shipley's needs to make a decent cup of coffee 4951

NOTHING beats a Krispy Kreme hot off the line. Most native Houstonians I know love Shipleys.  I think they are crap.  Duncan Donuts, while I like their coffee, has their donuts shipped in daily.  They do not make them in store.  So you are getting day old donuts.I like the mom and pop shops. Good fresh donuts.  You can watch them being made.I grew up in the country and the nearest donut shop was 30 miles away.  We used to get cans of biscuits, punch a hole in them, fry them, and pour a glaze for our donuts.  I still do this on occasion so my kids get to enjoy the experience. 4951

@ET: Ok.  But they arent freshly made...like just out of the grease and dipped in glaze.  To me they dont taste as good as some of the mom and pop shops.

@salth2o:  We did the same thing when we were young!  They weren't that great but they were a nice treat when there's no donut store around!I can remember we ONLY stopped at Krispy Kreme when the light was flashing indicating a fresh batch of hot donuts! I don't really like DD's glazed donuts that much, but they have a bigger selection and some of their other donuts are great.  I'm drooling just thinking about an apple fritter!

Being a Yankee I will always side with Dunkin Donuts.  But they aren't the same... I remember them being tastier years ago.  The Hess gas stations stores in NJ started selling Krispy Kremes & I could never understand why people raved about them. But they were brought in from somewhere else. Not a big fan of Shipley's Donuts. Dunkin donuts sells Apple filled donuts & they aren't nearly as good as they use to be. But the donut place on Northpark... Palace?  DonutsI  (think that's the name) - next to Philly cheese steak has real good Apple filled donuts. 4951

I'm a fan of the mom and pop donut shops as well. These big names places just live off the name not so much the product. 4951
