Not everyone should go to college. What a stupid, wasteful idea.

I'd be for more support of trade schools. At least you leave there with a truly marketable skill. Community college is just a cheaper way to get your basics before heading to a 4 yr college. Nothing at all wrong with it. That's what I did myself. But it doesn't really put you in any greater position in the job market. Heck...most 4 yr degrees don't really do that for you anymore.

All this is just feel-good legislation. Wasteful and useless. 4951

If you give something away for free, people see little value in it. 4951

@ET: Unfortunately, even with a free education, you still have to get up, attend class and do the work, so it's not likely to appeal to the do nothing's that don't or won't. 4951

@donnatella: Watch them do away with placement tests next.  "It's not FAIR to those that don't pass it!"When I first went to college, it was free for me.  I came from a single mom home and we were pretty poor.  What did I do with it?  I quit!  When I went back, I paid for it myself and made straight A's.  If it's free there is no value in your mind.  When you have to pay for it, you do much better because you don't want to pay for it again.

@Nurse3: I quit when it was free for me too-I was dumb, in love and married a military boy who was leaving.  Hopefully, they make it similar to a scholarship, where you have to maintain a certain GPA.

Gee, I could saved a ton of cash sending my DD to required classes that translate to a 4 year, for free for 2 years.Free 2 years at Lone Star, paid 2 years at UT/A&M, etc.Highly doubt it will hurt the regular colleges doing that........ Emoticon 4951

Doubt most people around kw would qualify. I would imagine is it only for low income people who cant afford even community college. 4951

Aren't there already pell grants in place for low income individuals? I believe Matthew Lesko wrote a whole series of books on the subject. When I was a single mom, I thought about looking into it, but I was too busy working and taking care of my kids.On one hand, this makes me think of the free breakfast program. The kids who want the free breakfast are required to take an entire tray, even if all they want is a milk or a fruit. It's all or nothing. I hope this program isn't that way. I hope they would allow some to go to school part time while they work, if that better suits their needs.On the other hand, I'm thinking about people I know who have received scholarships or grants and have done very well. It really depends on the individual. That said, it shouldn't be TOO easy to obtain the scholarships and grants. Those who really want and need them have always had the determination to find them in the past.If it ain't broke, don't fix it. 4951

@ET:

I keep trying to tell my girlfriends this yet they continue on that path. Hahaa
On a more serious note, government has a pretty good record of mucking up everything they touch, being completely inefficient and generally driven by factors that have nothing to do with things they seek to affect. IOW, they do things that on the surface have merit or value on some level but then the system they use to do anything is completely inadequate and corrupt. There's no issue in the current system that is blocking any reasonable person from getting an education, poor or not. 4951

@Okiedokie:  The article I read said they would have to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.
