Since we're expecting freezing temps tonight, and if you have a lawn sprinkler system, take a few minutes and protect your Backflow Preventer from freezing and breaking. For a picture and more:https://www.kingwood.com/message_board/view_message.php?message_board_parent_id=1009397&message_board_message_id=1009397 4951

@Retired_Engineer: I wrap about a 2 foot long piece of house insulation over it, put a kitchen trash bag over that and duct tape it tightly shut. Easy, quick and never had any problems. 4951

Ok, we have all outside spigots wrapped in duvets, as well as the pool pipes and pool heater. My potted plants have been covered with a sheet since Monday night.

We do have a sprinkler system but the thing hasn't worked right since we bought the house (even after the previous owners paid $600 to service it). That's a warranty project to follow up with in March!

Thanks for the reminder, though, RE! I still have to laugh, though, that we never covered up spigots and pipes up North in the Winter! 4951

@ctl74:  I believe the spigots up north are different than we have down here.  Our water supply protudes outside to the body of the spigot and is susceptible to freezing.  Up north, they use a spigot that the water supply line stays inside the wall and the handle on the spigot has a longer stem so that no water is exposed to the external temperatures.  Here are a couple of examples:

Thanks for the heads up.  Last night Channel 11 gave a how-to on winterizing the sprinkler system.  I didn't think 27 degree weather was a problem?  Have always just wrapped and covered ours.  HOWEVER, I have horrible memories of the gushing river coming from the blown cap during the freeze a few years ago.  So, with hubby at work, I trudged out with channel locks and screwdriver  and did what the weather peeps said. 4951
