There were losses due to HIGH gas prices as well. It's the economy, it's fluid. People adjust. 4951

There are a few petroleum companies getting ready for layoffs, unemployment is about to go up for sure in Texas. I have a few friends at various companies that have been informed ahead of time. My cousins' wife was just let go right  before Christmas. 4951

Some specialty chemical companies benefit from low oil prices if they are able to get oil for cheaper prices to be used as a key ingredient in their various products. 4951

Everybody buying a new car around me I always want a blue title. As far as the house goes I will always pay rent and utilities. If you work in the oil business be glad this 6 day 60+ work week sucks. Time to relax a little. I have a feeling oil will kick up in 2016 election year. 4951

It's sad that layoffs happen - I've been on the receiving end of it (and when 8 months pregnant with my middle son, to boot).

But, as @BooBear said, the economy is fluid. Things go up and down - it will recover in time. I hate feeling good about the lower gas prices and how it affects my wallet, but I know it's only a matter of time before it goes up again.

In the meantime, I know my company (banking/financial industry) will find a reason to cut more because of the falling oil prices. Someone sneezes too hard and people get laid off around here! 4951

Potential job losses are concerning.  However the irony is that many people railed against the government in general and the President in particular when gas prices were perceived as being too high.  Now that prices have dropped there's also concern about the local economy. This should not conjecture up the same tired political rhetoric of party politics.  Rather just as an acknowledgement that for every action there's a reaction.  Sometimes the reaction can be quite uncomfortable when it affects the back yard. 4951

.....and what about the 10's of 1000's of people that moved to TX and especially Houston because of the incredible strong Oil and Gas work industry????How long are they predicting the prices stay low?   It seems quick to be laying off so many people but then again, I don't know the numbers. 4951

This is why every major metropolitan area should strive to attract businesses that diversify their economy.  Michigan (where I'm originally from) is a prime example of what not to do.It was heartbreaking to see the devastation of the collapse of the auto industry as we knew it.  Detroit makes the news, as do the big plants up there...the big 3 have 12 major factories in the state...but most of the smaller cities have/had smaller manufacturing plants that are tied to industry as well.  i.e. when the big 3 slow down production, the workers at the old Prestolite/Autolite spark plug plant in Bay City, Michigan are sent home as well.  There are no other local plants and no other jobs to be found. You'd think that a city that went through the gas/oil craziness of the 70's would have worked hard to draw other major lines of business.  I was pretty surprised when I moved here 10 years ago to find so many people tied directly into the oil and gas industry.  I hate that anyone who is willing to work would lose their job and hope that if it happens on a large scale the area at least uses it as a catalyst to diversify.  Fortunately for me, I'm industry agnostic and currently in the finance services field so I'm not expecting any direct impact in regards to employment.  4951
