Anybody have shy /reserved children? My 2 year old is reserved around adults. She is fine with kids.

I was a shy kid and eventually grew out of it but I was also sheltered. Any tips or guidance. Hopefully it's just separation anxiety. 4951

Just let her be shy. She will get over it. Most adults become so overbearing around toddlers, asking them to do things or interact with them that just makes the kids more nervous. She will warm up to the people she wants to on her own just like she shyly began playing with me a little at lunch that day.

Yes, and it is normal. I would suggest not to force it and let your child have time to warm up to people. 4951

Mine wouldn't talk to anyone but me until she was 2.  She wouldn't talk to anyone outside family until she was 4(most of the time).  Think of it this way: I never had to worry about her running away in a store.  I can't get her to shut up now 4951

Thanks, I just need to figure out what to tell people. I can't really say back the *#%^ off. I guess something like she just needs her space and some time to warm up to you. Please respect her space.

My daughter is introvert till she knows and trust you, then she won't leave you alone.....lol....it's ok, it's a personality type, if we were all the same the world would suck. I haven't figured out why people think shy is different or wrong and try and change it. 4951

You shouldn't have to give a reason. If asked, I just say I have a shy guy and to give him a little time. 4951

Why would you tell any adult anything?  She is a toddler.  They are what they areEmoticon  Even outgoing kids, in certain situations are reserved.  You know your kid, that is the only thing that matters.

@Fallon:
I agree. You're so wiseEmoticon It is important for a child to develop his own voice and develop his own communication skills over time.

@Fallon: Yup. My lil man is a pretty out going kiddo. If we go out shopping or something and the cashier asks him if he had a good Christmas, he'll reply with yes ma'am/sir and maybe tell them what he got. And there are times when he's shy, especially if he feels he's being put on the spot.

@Fallon:
Most people it is easy to just ignore but there have been a few people who keep trying to get her to look at them or interact with them. For example there is a lady at Chick Fil A that always stops by to say hi and she try's to interact with my daughter. My daughter hides behind me and bearies her head in shoulders. The lady keeps trying to get my daughter to interact.

my 4 year old daughter is also very shy around people she doesn't know.  i don't necessarily think its a bad thing.  although when she is at home she is singing/dancing and non-stop talking.  i think they just are who they are and like someone said in an earlier post; if everyone was the same the world would be a boring place.  my parents are always telling me that my daughter is shy because she doesn't have siblings but i don't believe thats true because i am a shy person when i initially meet someone but i have a sibling so i don't think that has any effect on who we are as a person.   4951

Let your daughter be your daughter, and let the people who try to interact be who they are. 4951
