I'm finding this forum very helpful in my mental preparation for moving there. I hope you don't mind!We will be bringing three -- yes, three -- cats with us. Here we have basements, so litter boxes are hidden and we don't smell them. There are no basements there. What do people do with their litter boxes? They have no front claws, so to make them total outdoor cats doesn't quite work, and I've been told you have to watch for certain falcons(?) or something similar that can grab them on the fly. Just curious!Thanks,Laurie 4951

Our sweet boy's litter box is in our mud room/ laundry room. He's got claws with soft paw covers & is an inside cat. I think the big birds of prey are more of a rural area problem. It's a pretty pet friendly area around here! 4951

No cats for us but an interesting solution my friend found - she used the small closet under her stairs to put the litter box. Her hubby installed a small cat door so the furry friend could go in easily. Open the door property for easy cleaning. 4951

@Heathur:

Have you seen those mutant birds on KWD near the Country Club / High School? In addition, I have seen some huge hawks recently. 4951

I keep mine in the laundry room..   Get the best litter you can afford and change the litter more often...  Maybe invest in one of those self cleaning ones???    Welcome to the forest !!!! 4951

I may have a more difficult situation since I have three cats. The vet says one litter box per cat plus an extra, which means -- you got it -- four litter boxes! I'm thinking a small closet under the stairs won't quite cut it, not to mention odor. I don't know if I could clean it enough to keep down odor.  4951

We put a cat door from garage kitchen door entrance and put her box in a corner. Her food and water bowl are also out in the garage near the kitty door. She is declawed as well. She stays outside with us when we are outback. But she is in at night. We've installed cat doors to the garage in every home. Perfect set up for us and her. 4951

Ours are in the laundry room and we cut a cat hole in the door- so they can come and go and the dogs don't get into the litter boxes 4951

I have four cats, that means at least five litter boxes. Fortunately I have three bathrooms. I use all covered boxes and they are scooped everyday. Baking soda in the litter helps keep the odor down. Also totally empty and was the boxes at least once per month as the plastic absorbs the urine odor and it smells like ammonia. Important to use a good cat litter. Thank you for keeping your pets inside. Too many cats roaming the neighborhoods and they get hit by cars etc. 4951

CGM, I like that! Do you ever get home and open the garage door when the cat is out there? With three, that would be my main worry, that I would scare them and they would run out or just scare them whether they ran out or not. That is a possibility, though, provided we have an attached garage. Thanks! 4951

@Thumper100: We have 4 cats-we had all four in a 900sqft apartment before we moved to a house.  It really isn't as bad as what you think.  All are indoor cats.  Baking soda and scooping the litter at least 2times a day does wonders.

If you are moving to Kingwood you need to be careful with your cats.  There are Coyote's here and they do take off with and enjoy small pets as meals here.  We additionally have Hawks, Falcons and Eagles here that will swoop in for an easy meal.I recommend that you keep cat's in door (if you care about them), especially with missing claws and make them a bathroom in the house you purchase.  My wife made me make a bathroom for our cats and you will never know that we have cats in the house.  4951

@thumper100 if she is in the garage when we open the door she runs in the cat door. Most will! 4951

We use the breeze litter system. All the liquid goes through the pellets to an absorbing pad below. You just pull out a drawer to change it. Pellets are scoopable, and don't have to be changed for a month. It's made by tidy cat.

We've had it for about two years. No smell, and no trail of cat litter.

look for a house with a screened lanai off the back, put a cat door to the lanai and keep the litterboxes there. and you also get a screened lanai to relax outside in during mosquito season....which is about 9 months of the year 4951
