My inconsiderate Neighbor on Silver Falls, has a large dog who is left outside all night, that likes to bark excessively.  Does anyone have a proven method of resolving this type of problem.  I think the city has laws against nuisance noise.  What has worked for you in resolving barking dogs?  its 1230, my dog is inside, sleeping not barking. 4951

Call the police. Hopefully, that will let them know you are serious. If not, keep calling...they will get tired of going out there and get tougher on the neighbors. Once it costs them a citation, they will get the message. 4951

Have you spoken with the neighbor before calling in a third party to talk to them?

The best methods are to actually have a conversation with them.

@Stealth83:

I agree! They might not realize it bothers you. 4951

I don't know where on Silver Falls you are talking about, but I do know of a family on Silver falls that fosters dogs awaiting adoption.  Regardless, I am a fan of talking to your neighbors first,  if that does not work, most HOA's have rules about nuisance pets, then the police. The police have much better things to do than to be a referee for neighbors. If there is a noise ordinance, the police would have to witness the offense to be able to cite it, and they would only do that after a few warnings.   Keep in mind, that if you call the police about a barking dog at 130 in the morning, it will be the lowest priority call there is, and it make take a couple of hours before you see an officer. When I patrolled Kingwood, we would get these calls once in a while, there really is not much the police can do about it. I even had the arrogant members of some HOAs call us about HOA rule violations.. and there is absolutely nothing the police can do about those.. I have put a device called a sonic egg in my back yard near the fence that emits a very high tone when a dog barks, and they stop barking, I have two neighbors behind me that don't control their dogs, the sonic egg works some.. 4951

Unless you are friends already, if you attempt to talk with them and it either goes bad or they don't care and ignore you, when you decide it is time to call the police, they will know who called. It could start a bigger neighbor war that you realize or bargain for in the beginning. If they have barking dogs they KNOW it is a disruption. That's likely why the doga are outside instead of inside.

Let the police handle people that are rude, unneighborly, disruptive and disturbing the peace. That's their job. 4951

I have the same problem with my neighbor who has two large pits in their backyard at all hours of the day and night. They just bark every time I take my dog outside and continue barking for at least two or three hours after that. I've called the cops twice but still nothing is being done. I say if you get pets, then at least pay some attention to them. Poor things are probably bored out of their mind. 4951

Be a decent neighbor and go and talk to them.Its the right thing to do.If that does not work, I have discovered a single vicoden wrapped in a piece of bacon will provide for 10 full hours of quiet. 4951

If it is the 3200 block of Silver Falls, good luck! They have a minimum of 4 dogs who are left out 24/7 no matter the weather. They bark and howl all day, esp when the fire sirens sound. My back yard is unusable as it smells like a zoo back there. Many neighbors have called various groups and no one seems to get any action. I have a device that emits a sound to discourage them, but they know just how far away to go so they can't hear it. One neighbor had those dogs jumping over her fence and threatening her and her daughter, even coming up to her windows, but no one seems to be able to help. She finally got her fence fixed so they can't get over it. She tried to talk to the people, but they claimed they "can't afford" to fix the fence, then the next time she knocked, they pretended they weren't home. The dogs have dug under the house, also dug up the box for cable TV. If they show up in my yard, they'll be pepper sprayed! Someone suggested calling the COH Board of Health, as the conditions there are most unsanitary, we may try that next! 4951

@donnatella:
Their job is to enforce the laws.   You know, like drunk driving, rape, murder, burglarly.   Not unneighborly people who won't talk to one another.

GEESH

@Stealth83: They enforce the laws...ALL laws, not just the ones we think are more serious or more important.  There are times when face to face just isn't smart at all.  People get overly defensive and overly hostile when they perceive someone is trying to tell them what to do, and the police realize this and act as intermediaries.  It would be one thing if they already had an acquaintance or friendly relationship where they could casually mention an issue and have it quickly resolved respectfully.  If not, you have no idea what you are dealing with.

Dogs barking at 12:30 at night and the owner doesn't care enough to bring them. Those are the type of people that aren't worth having a conversation with about their nuisance 'pet'. If they care they would have put a stop to it at that hour. I'd report the noise to the police. 4951
