Ok, I'm looking for some humane alternatives to declawing a cat THAT ACTUALLY WORK. We were going to have our stray kitty that we took in declawed. We have really nice furniture & I work WAY too hard to let my possessions get ruined by a cat (it's happened in the past.) He's got an appointment Monday for all of his shots & ball removal, & was ALSO going to be declawed. But he's about 3 yrs old & 10.6lbs, & the more I research declawing, the more it makes my stomach turn. I love my sweet boy too much to put him through that, so we've decided against declawing. With that being said, I will NOT allow a cat to ruin my furniture. Period. So we are looking for alternatives that really & truly work. Maybe some first hand testimonies as well? Thanks! 4951

Trim his nails- go to A pet supply store and get some soft claws- they are claw covers that get glued on- they last about 6 weeks or so. You just have to deal with upkeep- but way more humane 4951

When my sister had indoor cats she used the claw covers as well and was very happy with them.  4951

I used soft claws on my cat who was a carpet destroyer. They worked really well. They stayed on surprisingly good. I'd just replace them as they fell off. 4951

Good job on not going through with declawing. I could never put an animal through something so barbaric. Plus with him being a bigger cat...it would make it that much worse for him. 4951

Get him used to having them trimmed and give him plenty of things he CAN claw up.

I have (too) many cats and I have no problem with anything other than carpeted posts getting torn up. 4951

@Heathur: kitty caps claw covers. Mgw has used them on his cats in the past and says they work.

@taramay & @Heathur   without his claws he should never be let out again, It makes him defenseless.

Soft paws did not work on my cat.  I had the vet put them on and they would be off in no time.  There was no way that I could put them on since she would bite me. My cat did not scratch things it was just from jumping on the tables and jumping off that the cat scratched my tables. 4951

We use the cat claw covers too! They work pretty well on him. Also a scratch pad and when you see the cat trying to claw at something take said cat to the scratch pad and rub it his paws on it and tell him "here" seemed to help bo 4951

One of my cats has a special chair I bought from Goodwill that he claws at. None of the others claw at things(the boy does when my dd accidentally shuts him in her room). Our oldest cat came to us declawed.  She does not like certain cat litters-you can tell it hurts her paws. I also have made cat furniture from old tables, they like to look outside, so I put the tables in front of the windows. 4951

Declawing is inhumane, cruel and you will end up with a cat that has behavioral issues and may end up not using litter box.The cat claw covers are great alternatives, also a good scratching post  in each room (rub catnip on it)They also sell covers for end of sofa's/chairs to keep cat from damaging them 4951

btw, All I do is put out scratching posts for my cats.  When I noticed Neno was trying to scratch my old sofa I but a scratching post where he would see it when he came down from his room , he took to it immediately and has used it since.Have horizontal and vertical  ones in various places 4951

We have 6 cats and NONE of them use my furniture to dull their nails.  Clipping nails often and a good cat tree is what does the trick.   I would never dream of cutting of my first knuckle so why would I do that to an animal . 4951
