Depends on what brand car, some makes use a hydraulic fluid, some use an electronic p.s. fluid some use standard fluid.
Look in your owners manual for your specific type of fluid.

From manual
MOPARPowerSteeringFluid+4,MOPARATF+4 AutomaticTransmissionFluid or equivalent.
The guy at auto parts can get you the right fluid. 4951

It says ATF+4 fluid is recommended.

I saw on you tube I can do a quick clean with a turkey baster. Doesn't get all the old out obviously but the fluid in there is still red/pink color. It hasn't turned black yet.

Can I just add to fill it to the max line or should I turkey bast the old out first?

@foxymama - have you taken your car in for a 30,000 mile or 45,000 mile check? They usually check all the fluids and refill the ones that need it. 4951

@foxymama:

If you don't mind sacrificing a turkey baster then I would say yes suck old out and top off with new. Otherwise it's fine just topping off.
P.S. flushes are not usually on 30,000 mile services and are an upsell. 4951

@jls2:
I just had my oil change and tire rotation at NTB where they "check fluids". But the only fluid they topped off was the windshield washer fluid.

@foxymama:  you probably only need to top it off with new fluid, but if you want to go the extra mile, suck out about the same amount that the container of new fluid contains and replace with new.  Power steering is not particularly hard on the fluid and lasts a long time.

@foxymama - the mileage checks are more extensive (and more expensive) but they are worth it. I always take my car to the dealer - that way they know more about the specific car. 4951

We go the Shell station on WLH and NP.  They do a great job, know what needs to be done, and aren't nearly as expensive as a dealership.But all cars do last longer with the standard maintenance being done.

@Fallon:  Been using them for virtually all maintenance for 20 years.

If your power steering fluid is low, you likely have a leak. 4951

@fcabanski:
Possibly, it's been at that level for a few months. I thought that NTB would top off my fluids but they didn't so that is why I am asking. The next oil change I will go to Carmax and have them do any maintance on the other fluids. 4951
