I had Tay's picture done with Santa. She's just turned 2, so as expected she wasn't thrilled with the process. I have been told that I shouldn't put her through this anymore, to skip the Santa pictures and just tell her when she's 6 that Santa isn't real.

What are your thoughts?

Do you carry on the traditions and allow your kids to believe as long as they want, or are you brutally honest from the start?

We have kept the tradition going, but i think with the youngest being 8, everybody already knows lol. I just keep telling themthat if they dont belive, they dont receive. Its kind of a running joke now. 4951

At 2 it's hit or miss if they like Santa but at 4, he is magical to them. They can grasp the concept better. 4951

In this day and age. when 2 to 4 year olds use ipads, they probably can google the information on Santa themselves! 4951

Here was my response to said comment...

yeah she wasn't thrilled to have her picture done. But having these photos for her to look back on will be so special for her. As I'm sure it now is for your son. It's part of instilling the magic of Christmas. Sure she'll figure it all out one day...but I would never spoil those childhood memories for her just because she had a tear at the age of two. And I don't know about anyone else's family, but Santa still comes to visit all of us! 4951

We kept Santa around as long as possible. Toward the end, he would ask me if Santa was real or if it was just us doing everything.  My response was always, without confirming or denying anything, "I believe in Santa, there are some that don't and that's alright.  What do you believe?"

As the years went on, his friends were telling him one thing but he still wanted to believe.  Then one year, while looking at lights, he said he no longer believed in Santa and knew that it was all us.  He asked me point blank.  To this day, I maintain the same same answer..."I'm an adult and I believe in Santa.  You are free to believe either way."   He then reminded me that I pledged to never ever lie to him and asked why had I lied all these years.  I told him I never lied to simplying telling him all this time that I believe in Santa.  Then I reminded him that has always been my responses to him, that it was carefully crafted to keep the Christmas magic going, without confirming, denying or lying to him. He said "yup, Mom, you're in the right field...excellent lawyer material."  4951

@ProblemAgain:  No, he isn't that old.  He did until about 6th grade, when stuff like that was no longer cool.  When he stopped believing is when he decided to stop.  That way, I didn't have to have the difficult talk with him like I received when I was a kid, and admit that we had been lying to him all this time, which I told him I would never do. 4951

@cgm10sne1:

Things are going well! We're in a rental until we either buy or build. We're starting to look at some land and plan on figuring out what we want to do in the next few months. The rental house is nice, much bigger than our old home. But I hate being in a 2 story. It sucks! The wee one has adjusted just fine. I'm now 21 weeks preggers and things are going great as far as that's concerned. The dogs don't care where we live, as long as they have their beds! We're just still learning our way around and figuring things out. My mom was in town for a few days so Ken and I could go to a couple company Christmas parties. It was good to get dressed up and be around other adults!

Thanks for asking about us! 4951

Whey my youngest hit 3 no way would he get near Santa.  He believed, but never would do another picture.  But no way would I tell a child.  I think it is mean.  Kids grow up so fast, if they can have a bit of magic in their lives let them.  If this harms a child long term, then the kid had some serious issues anyway.And honestly isn't always the best policy.  Kids need to learn that too.  You don't tell someone something that you know will hurt them, just so you can take the moral hight ground of I don't lie to my children.  What a crock of bs.My oldest knows, but my elementary schooler doesn't. I am sure he suspects, but he hasn't asked me yet.  And for this I am glad.  My oldest does all he can to make sure his brother believes tooEmoticonWe don't get long with our kids, believing, why rush it?  They have their whole life of reality waiting to gobsmack em.  Let them have this one thing, for as long as they want it.

@Fallon:
So well said! They grow up too fast as it is. I want her to experience the excitement she deserves as long as possible. She'll learn the harsh truth of the world all too soon anyway.

Do what's right for your family. I have the crying kid Santa pics- I cherish them and No permanent harm was done. As far as belief- I'm with Donnatella- and at 57 I still believe in Santa- he still visits this house as he did in my parents house until they passed. We even have an Elf that keeps an eye on hubby Emoticon 4951
