I painted a couple of tables. Used some old oil based paint for the table tops. It's now been 14+ hours since I painted ONE coat and it's still slightly tacky/ sticky. I did not use a primer.Prior to using the old paint I googled whether or not it could have gone bad- I read that if it's gone bad it might be lumpy, but never really expires. The paint had a slight dried layer on the top, when peeled off, the rest of the can looked fine and mixed easily.I painted in my air-conditioned house. Now what? give it more time to dry? Is there another product I can use to make it harden? It does not need any more paint- one coat covered it fine. 4951

OIl based paint takes a longer time to dry. I'd wait 48 hours and then give it a second coat.  4951

Like cgm10 said, oil based paints take a lot longer to dry, water evaporates much quicker than oil.Oil dries best in a warm environment. 4951

hmm... maybe I should heat up my house while I'm gone to work today? lol. these are my coffee tables, so it's imperative that they have a good solid paint. i'm a little nervous at this point! 4951

@14valentine...be patient...all good things take time. if you rush & do not wait till the tables are 100% dry you will have things sticking to your tables & the nice finish will be gone . Then you will have to sand & start all over once again...not a job you want to do in doors . Just be patient oil based paints take 3 times as long to dry , 4951

@WJo- I'm sure you're right. Unfortunately I have two speeds: GO and STOP. lol. Also, I have little hands around that are just dying to touch the pretty things. ha. I'll take a deep breath and wait. Emoticon 4951

@14valentine....put the tables in a room where you can close the door to keep little ones away from them till they dry. 4951

i'd give it a week. even when the paint feels dry, underneath it is still curing and especially older paint that has less vehicle (solvent) to volatilize which makes it dry faster. otherwise what can happen is that  when you put something on the table too soon, the object will meld with the paint over time and you will have to break it free to move it. that happened to a friend who was way too eager to stock the shelves in his new store. he didn't wait long enough and as a result, the bottom rows of cans and bottles etc were stuck to his new shelving like they had been glued there. 4951

Is there a solvent I can put on it to help it dry faster? This paint was pretty separated when I stirred it. Can was probably 6 years old (gosh, can't believe I've been in this house that long!- had I done the math yesterday I might not have used that paint! Lol). 4951

you can't do a thing now except perhaps put them in a heated room or put a heat lamp on it from a distance. anything you try to do with the finish will just mess up the finish cause you have a skin already forming. if you do something like this in the future, it is better to use multiple coats of paint. thin the first coat out with the proper solvent so it flows easily and dries quickly (works even better if you are spraying cause you just fog the piece and that is like a prime coat that the next coat will stick better) then a couple coats of the topping, letting them dry between applications 4951

Good advice. The rest of the table was painted with chalk paint mix. It stuck like glue. I thought oil would be more durable for the table tops. Also, I was afraid the plaster of Paris would make the black look grey. 4951

Looks like you patience preachers were right! It's definitely drier than it was this morning! I put them back in the living room, but will refrain from putting anything on them til end of the week. Yay! 4951
