Stay away from the area for about a week. The smell will go away and the carcass can be a warning to other critters to keep away. 4951

crawl up into your attic & follow your nose....the smell will lead you right to the dead critter.....then you need to put out DECON to  deter other critters that might get  into your attic....if there's one there are usually more .... 4951

Slightly off topic, but still pertains to a dead rat:

In college I dated a guy that shared a house with two other guys.  They ended up with a rat that died somewhere in the house.  The stinch was unbearable, but being typical young guys in a bachelor pad, they couldn't care less, let it stay there and literally rot.  Trust me....THE SMELL DOESN'T GO AWAY.  Instead, it permeates the entire house.

I finally broke up with him because I couldn't stand to go to his place, and his "I don't care about a dead carcas in my house" was a good indication that he would not be good boyfriend, S.O. or later, husband material.  And...I was spot on with my prediction.  Years later, he knocked up a girl and refused to marry her.  Turns out he didn't want to give up his "freedom."  Stupid girl...they had two kids that way, have been on and off in their relationship for decades and now, nearly 30 years later, they live together and HE STILL WON'T MARRY HER.

I'm now thankful for that little dead rat or mouse that sacrificed his life to bring me to my senses.  4951

so there was more than one rat in his house
@ProblemAgain: Bingo!  He wasn't 100% a rat, though...he provided two houses for her and the kids, did more than his fair share to support them all, while she worked too, and was very present in the kids lives, living there on and off over the years.  To me, that's not enough if you won't marry their mother and give the family your name, but at least he was taking care of them.

Years later, I ran into him while out.  I asked him how married life was...he said "I ain't married."  I rocked his world by teling him he was, in fact, common law married and the "wife" and kids had just as much rights as if they had gotten married.  Turned out she was holding themselves out as married and he wasn't correcting her, they were living together and had kids....more than enough for a Texas common law marriage:  (1) telling others (2) intent (3) cohabitation.

I knew that and enjoyed every second of dropping that one on his lap and balls. Then I turned and walked away, never looking back, giggling the whole time.  4951

@msmith002 - I called my exterminator and they put out traps. They will find it for you. At that point, I had all the holes on the exterior of my house covered with wire mesh. That seemed to keep them out. 4951

@ProblemAgain: He was not the brightest bulb in the fixture. He was decent looking but had other great manly "assets" that were unforgetable.  Emoticon  Plus, he was one of those people that was just fun to be around.  He knew all of the great places to go, knew where all the parties were and was the life of the party when he got there.  He was a free spirit and would jump in the car and go to New Orleans for the weekend just because it was there.   All of that is cool for the young and single crowd, but not so much for a Mom with HIS 2 kids that need their father to get off the party circuit.  4951

@ProblemAgain:  That's true, but then live with her, if she is willing, but don't make babies and deny to the world that you are not and will not marry their mother, then come and go from the household as if you are coming in for vacation a few times a year.  Be a cool single bachelor or be a family man 100%.  4951

@donnatella:  Donnatella.. the subject of common law marriage was discussed here before and I thought the law in Texas was like what you said.. that all you had to do was live together and give the impression that you were married to be common law. Someone (don't remember who) corrected me so I Googled it and they were right. The law was changed to require consent.

@BlissfullyRetired: That was me. The fact that she tells people they are married, he knows it and does not correct her, knowingly leaving others to believe that ESTABLISHES intent as well as holding out they are married. His action fulfill all common law marriage requirements.
