New Year's morning there will be 700 marathon runners from all over the US using our trails.  They are charged $85 per person. Most of these participants are not residents or homeowners. They will begin in GreenTree park and run throughout most of Kingwood. This little park is designed for local residents only with about 6 parking spaces. The runners and their companions park throughout GreenTree up and down the streets until late in the Day on New Years. This makes it impossible for residents to get in and out of their own neighborhood. Residents also can't use their own park. Also, residents find it difficult to walk or run on their own trails New Year's Day.The way I read our Trail Association By Laws, all of this is prohibited use by outsiders. The By Laws say that the Parks and Trails are for use by homeowners, residents and their families. No one seems to be able to stop this misuse  of our trails. If you agree that having this event in our neighborhood is a bad idea, please contact your trail trail association and also your home owners association and let them know you do not want this event to happen in our neighborhood. 4951

So you decide to complain about it 3 weeks before the event instead of months in advance when you might make a real difference. Good luck getting nowhere 4951

So, who is sponsoring it?  Must be some approval authority, what is the money used for?I'd go out the night before, sleep late and watch football all day.  4951

"Outsiders" on the trails? It is public domain. Unless they are invading a gated private area, I fail to see the issue. 4951

I would be interested in knowing where the money is going. Will it be used to better playgrounds maybe, or clean up the trails a bit better?? 4951

700 x 85 = $59,500

Add to that the amount of $ it will bring to area businesses and restaurants....

Or, they could up our property taxes to cover that amount of $ used to maintain the trails and such. One day of driving in the 'hood headache doesn't seem so bad now, eh? 4951

700 x 85 = $59,500I believe this ought to be a question asked of our Association to ensure it does not go to crap like bonuses or office parties or other perks. Just a thought. 4951

@trailrunner: Waaaaaaaa. Its been every year for the last 20 years or so. You TOTALLY lie when you say they"run throughout most of kingwood." Just a total lie. Its about 4 miles of the 90+ miles of greenbelts. (4 out and 4 back). Its one day a year. One day out of 365.

Waaaaaaaa.

I believe this marathon was started in 2000 by Rick Worley who was an avid marathoner. He was tragically killed in an accident in 2010 and I believe the marathon is now in his memory.
History: Rick Worley was the reason for starting the Texas Marathon in 2000. He was working on setting a Guinness World Record for the most marathons on consecutive weekends when he ran 200 in 159 consecutive weeks. There was not a marathon being held during the Christmas weekend in 1999, which would have broken Rick's streak. We organized the Free Kingwood Marathon and held it on 12/26/99. Rick went to Ohio to run a series of marathons between Christmas and New Year's. He needed a marathon on New Year's Day and could only find a very difficult ultra marathon. We offered to organize another marathon six days after the Free Kingwood Marathon using the same course, with a new name, "Jammin' in January" and held it on New Year's Day. The race has been held on New Year's Day every year since then. Rick completed the Texas Marathon four times and participated in it every year until 2006 when he injured his ankle. He completed 299 marathons including at least four in every state and also at least one on six continents. Rick Worley was tragically killed in a traffic accident on 7/25/10. We send our love to Rick's family. We will miss Rick, his laugh and his love of friends, family and marathoning. . -paula&steve

Events:
Marathon (26.2 miles-4 loops)
Half Marathon (13.1 miles-2 loops)

Course description:
Four loops on greenbelts in Kingwood, starting at the Greentree Pool, proceeding to Lake Houston and returning to the Greentree Pool. The course is run entirely on concrete greenbelt trails which are open to the public

Race limit:
The race has a limit of 700 participants.

T-shirts, medals, and stuff:
Each participant and volunteer will receive a shirt. Each finisher will receive a custom finisher medal and a squeezie elephant with the finishing position hanging around its neck. Each registered participant will receive a goody bag. (The finisher medals are a secret until race day). The Texas Marathon started as a marathon event only. Later we added a half marathon to accomodate family members and local runners in the interest of promoting the sport. We became that our event has changed its focus from a marathon to a half. This was not our intention. We heard several runners comment that there was no reason to run the marathon when they would receive the same medal for running the half. We agreed. For the 2013 and all future events, marathoners will receive the really large medal and half marathoners will receive a substantial, yet smaller one. We feel this is in the best interest of the marathon sport.

Awards:
We have designated 2014 as the "year of the squeezie elephant". Each finisher will receive a squeezie elephant with the official finishing position hanging around its neck. Don't blame us if you have a very slow elephant. Last year was the "year of the squeezie cheesie rat" and the prior years have been: "year of the pink pig", "year of the yellow rubber duck", "year of the bat", "year of the monkey" , "year of the bear", and "year of the cow". There are no age group awards because every runner is special.

The Charity:
The net proceeds of this race will be donated to the Marathon Challenge running program.

Marathon Challenge Program:
Twenty two years ago we were repeatedly asked by PTA parents "How far was that marathon?". After deciding that it nearly impossible to teach adults what a marathon was, we would teach their children. We came up with a program in our local school called the Marathon Challenge Program. The program promotes fitness for elementary school students by providing t-shirts to the students who complete 26.2 miles or more of running/walking during the school year. The first year we had 14 students complete the distance. Each year we've added schools in the area to the program. In 2013 9,300 students completed the distance and received t-shirts. The program has provided thousands of t-shirts to children for 21 years. The progam is funded entirely by private donations. Every dollar donated goes directly to the students.

My MIL has been signed up for this since August. She is flying down from Oregon on the 30th. She participates in marathons and similar events all over the country. She, like most marathon runners, is very conscientious and considerate of these trails, and appreciates having a nice place to run. We are looking forward to seeing her, and she will definitely contribute to the local economy as she spoils her grandkids rotten. Especially my DD who is turning 7 on the 30th, and will likely beg her MiMeow for that squeezie elephant. She has a thing for elephants. 4951

My wife and I have run in this race for several years.  It is probably about half Kingwood folks and have driving in from all over town.  It is a neat event and, counter to your argument trailrunner, I have no problem getting in and out of the area, so I think your description of Greentree residents not being able to get in or out of their neighborhood is complete BS.   It starts at around 7 and is done by noon, on New Year's Day.  4951

I live in Greentree Village and never even realized this run existed.  I'm usually at home watching college bowl games. The traffic around that park is always a mess with the summer swim teams.  The run is only part of a day, so find something else to whine about.  I just detour around that park, but I can see that it could be a pain for people living near the park.  If someone blocks your driveway, just call and have them towed. 4951
