So we got a new laptop last week. First time using Windows 8 & I'm not gonna lie, it's unfamiliar territory. Is there a way to log in without having to sign into my hotmail account? Any tips for a Windows 8 n00b? 4951

yeah it sucks. There are freeware programs to help it look like windoze 7. It will also get you a shutdown button....its a h eckuva learning curve. Be sure if you are on 8 run your updates to 8.1 4951

I HATED Windows 8 when i got a new PC  a year ago. Version 8.1 is slightly better.  I have mine set to automatically go to the desktop view on startup and it is much more familiar.  It takes some time to get used to it.  Just stick with it.  Let me know if you have any specific questions. 4951

I like Windows 8. I went from Windows XP last year to Windows 8! I always stay on the desktop so it is very similar to what I was used to. I also have a touch screen computer so that helps with Windows 8. 4951

@jls2:  I wasn't told about Windows 8 needing a touch screen so I didn't get one.  That's a major problem with v8 but v 8.1 improved that issue.  I already have to use a keyboard and mouse.  I don't need or want a third input method.Microsoft dumbed down Windows 8 to make it function like a tablet.  That was a bad move.  Fortunately, using the desktop keeps the "windows" familiarity.

Here is how I reset it ...1. Boot your PC and enter your password. 2. Press Win-X (by which I mean hold down the Windows key and then tap X). 3. In the pop-up menu that appears, click Command Prompt (Admin). 4. In the command prompt, type control userpasswords2, then press Enter. (If this sounds familiar, it's because the same command works in earlier versions of Windows.) 5. In the User Accounts dialog that appears, uncheck the box marked Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. 6. Click OK, then confirm the automatic sign-in option by entering your password (twice). 7. Reboot. 4951

I use this to give me a win 7 experience:  http://www.classicshell.net/ But Windows 10 is coming out and you can get a free beta now  (don't ask about what happened with windows 9).Win 10 brings back the start menu, but keeps some of the optimizations of win 8.  Under the hood win 8 isn't bad.  It has many performance tweaks (like boot up time improvements).  But yes, the UI is terrible for desktops.  4951

@Heathur:  There are some Apps that give Windows 8 tips.  Just search and load them.  To set your computer to go directly to the desktop, see the attached.  It's an alternative method to what tonyaust listed.  You only need to do the first section.http://www.7tutorials.com/how-boot-desktop-windows-8-skip-start-screen

Windows 8 is fine.  They just put things in different places.  You want the  desktop ?  click the desktop tile.   on the main/start/ tile screen and don't know where anything is?  Just start typing, dont have to click, or swipe or anything, just start typing and it will search and find what you are looking for.  Once ya find it, right click on it and near the bottom tell it to pin to taskbar, and it will always be there when ya go to desktop. 4951
