Alright - I have some deck planters that I'd like to clean out (of my pathetic flowers from the summer), and fill with something more colorful and season appropriate in time for the holidays (and my parents visiting for the first time).

Disclaimer: I know I will have to pull the planters inside on some of the really cold nights. However, what can I plant that will hold up in this wet(ter), cold(er) weather like we have today? 4951

Cyclamen:  Garden cyclamen are used in our winter landscapes in Houston. These vary in size
from large-flowered types to intermediate sizes to miniatures.
Large-flowered cyclamen generally have 3-inch blooms on approximately
6-inch stems. Intermediates are approximately 4 inches tall and produce
5-inch-long flower stems with 2-inch blooms available in numerous
shades. Miniature cyclamen are in the 4-inch height range with
3-inch-long flower stems and 1-inch flowers.Cyclamen can flower
through late fall, winter and well into spring. Plant in an area that
receives morning sun, filtered sun or bright shade. Plant high. A sandy
loam is ideal; good drainage is a must. 4951

I mix cyclamen with impatiens( if you can find them). They actually hold up well- but cover if there's a hard freeze 4951

Pansies are a good colorful choice... They can take the cold. Once I actually had some that survived having ice on them!! 4951

Snap dragons. Ornamental kale, pansy, dusty miller, Purple Heart kin to wandering jew. Sweet alyssum smells heavenly. We are lucky to have milder winters, pretty much all annuals will do well if we don't have freezing temps several nights in a row. My zinnias are still going strong! @ctl74 4951

Second the snapdragons!   They are my go-to every fall/winter for my big planters.  They come in a big variety of colors, and also in varying heights.  Violas seem to work better for me than pansies although their blooms are more petite.  And cyclamens last through the spring if you have them in the right spots.  And don't forget dianthus ...... it loves the cool weather and will go through the summer as long as it isn't in a place where it will fry. I saw a gorgeous planter with red and white dianthus, snapdragons, and alyssum.   Very Christmasy. 4951

@ctl74: Go to Kingwood Garden Center or Warrens.  They can hook you up.  I find Kingwood Garden Center employees and owner are very knowlegable but Warrens usually has a bigger selection.
