     Hey there! I'm 15 years old and my family is moving to Kingwood this January. I have a couple of concerns... My first question is: Are there scorpions in Kingwood? Being a Michigander, I simply cannot wrap my head around the idea of scorpions. Question two: What other critters such as snakes or spiders should I be on the look out for? I am terrified of all of these new critters! Please let me know. Thanks! Emoticon-A very concerned teenage girl 4951

No scorpions, lots of Mosquitos and tree roaches. Few spiders but I have an exterminator so they are outside. An occasional grass or garter snake but they are more scared of you than you are of them, sometimes. Oh,there are geckos (at night) and cameleons along with some tree frogs. 4951

there was an issue in River Chase and a newer subdivision with baby scopions.  But I think a good exterminator will eliminate those.  Yes can be scary to find one in your shoe!  Now as for other critters, we have em all!  There is all types of home remedies to get rid of them in your yard but being as tropical as Houston is we have snakes almost all year.  Just dont let your yard get too high.  A good cat or dog will get rid of em Emoticon 4951

@Tricia1220:  I have lived in Kingwood 21+ years and have never seen a scorpion here.  If you go about 4 hours NW into the Hill Country, there are scorpions there.  Yes, we have spiders, cockroaches, and lots of mosquitoes, but they are more nuisances than anything else.  There are some snakes in this area, but you will learn where they like to live. You will be fine!  Welcome to Kingwood! 4951

Being a Michigander

@Tricia1220: There are a few of us native Michiganders already living the good life in the Kingwood bubble.  Preemptive welcome!  Which part of the state are you moving from?  I was raised in the woods west of Pinconning. The relative size of the bugs are bigger and they are much more abundant.  Mosquitoes are a year round thing.  Also, google "tree roaches" and get used to seeing them alive and dead every now and then.  We do have 4 venomous snakes indigenous to the area; rattlesnake, coral snake, cottonmouth (water moccasin), and copper head.  We could have a long discussion...and often do on this board...about the risk vs benefit of each but the bottom line is that you need to watch where you step while in wooded areas and don't play with the snakes until you can positively identify the flavor.Scorpions can be found, yes, but they are not as common as you probably expect and the version we have in this area are very small.  They'll be like the size of a cricket.  The big desert scorpions that I suspect you're picturing are not native to this part of Texas.  We do have gators, though, so that sort of makes up for it!   4951

The little scorpions are not dangerous, they sting about like a wasp...but you'll live. I've not seen Any scorpions here at all. I saw more in my house in Atlanta Ga.  As far as snakes, you'll not likely see any as they are as scared of you as you they. Most of the ones you might happen to get a glimpse of in your yard are good snakes that eat lizards an small rodent.  Though there are poisonous ones here just like up north. I've not seen any poisonous spiders since being here either. I've yet to see a black widow here.  Just wolf spiders which are harmless and good garden spiders like Charlotte's Web. You'll be fine and you'll love wearing flipflops and cute shoes 9 months out of the year!  4951

@Tricia1220:
Hi there! I think your dad was on here earlier today, lol! Anyway, you'll love kingwood. KHS has a great drama program, and I'm sure you will make friends quickly. There aren't scorpions. We do have some snakes, copperheads, water moccasins and coral snakes, but I haven't seen one in Kingwood myself. We have Black Widows and Brown Recluse spiders, but you don't need to fear them! They both like to hide in and around rubbish and wildfires (so do snakes), and in dark seldomly disturbed places. I have lived here as long as you have been alive, and have never seen a Brown Recluse. I've only seen BW's outside or inside the garage. A rule of thumb to follow is to never stick your hand anywhere you can't see, like behind stuff in the garage or a shed, or rummaging around in a box from the garage. Most of us use a pest control company or do our own spraying to keep the critters away. We also have fireants. Unless you step on a mound, you needn't worry about them.
Welcome!

Scorpions aren't a problem. Don't worry about snakes or spiders either.

However it's not surprising that El Chupacabra hasn't been mentioned. It's Kingwoods darkest secret that people refuse to talk about... 4951

How many and what kind of critters will vary on where your house is. I'm right on the greenbelt by the creek so we have all kinda of animals & bugs, but friends who are completely surrounded by other houses have very few. Embrace the critters, get a good exterminator for the bugs & it will be fine.
Been here 8 years now & love it still! 4951

Ok it'll be fine. We do have snakes and some baby scorpions- only in new subdivisions- not nearly as big as what I saw in Hill Country.
You will have to get use to the anoles and skinks( aka chameleons and skinks to Yankees). They are way cool and eat all of the mosquito species you don know about plus the one you do know. There are no black flies and o oh the occasional deer and horse fly ( unless you ride- then yeah they are here!
Texas is super cool for teenage girls- because there are cute guys here, everyone is super friendly ( we moved here as my dx started her senoir year and within 3 days of starting school she found a friend who she could bum a ride with to school)
Don't sweat the big stuff - within a year you will be telling everyone I WILL NEVER move back North!!
Texas is awesome- who doesn't love summer 12 months a year!!!!! 4951

I have been here 20 some odd years and tree roaches are the scariest thing ever. They were worse in the back of kingwood in my opinion but seem to get better closer to 59. I have been in oakhurst for 4 years and have only seen a hand full. I have also only seen 1 grass snake i assume my dog killed it and wanted to share with me. better hope you have remote start on ur car because you will need it, not for winters but for the hot summers. 4951
